new to me 77 is sead to have a bad t18 ?

How can you tell if a transmission is good if it is not in a truck. it looks good seems tight no shavings or anything in the bottom. took the top off nothing jumps out a me.

I guess I would have to ask who said it was bad and what specifically did they say was wrong.

The t18 is a pretty strong transmission. The only common issues seems to be popping out of 3rd on hard acceleration. I would pull the cover and check the shifter bushings, otherwise would probably just run it.
