2007 Edge PCM Coils Problems

Nearly six weeks ago I had a coil go out while driving home in the Edge. Unlike every other Ford I've had since 2001, when the coil goes out in an Edge it burns up the PCM for you too.

I replaced all the coils and plugs and sent the PCM off to be repaired. ($200 repair vs $1200 for a new PCM from Ford). The PCM repair guy calls and tells me mine is beyond repair so he sends me a reman one. Install the reman PCM, but have to have it flashed so the Edge will actually start.After having it flashed the shop calls and says the PCM is bad and that it burned up another coil on a different cylinder than before. Send this PCM back to be warrantied but find a used PCM while I'm waiting on the other one. Install the used one and it's bad causing a coil #2 to not fire but the others are firing.

Am I having a run of bad computers or could there be something else cause the computers to fry? The original diagnostic from Ford stated faulty PCM and coil #6 needed replaced. I'm getting tired of spending money on this thing and really want it back on the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ford updated the pcm, coils, and spark plugs for this problem. They need to be replaced together as a set or the old coils will burn up the new pcm. I would bite the bullet and install Ford parts. That way you know its fixed and will stay fixed.

Fixed....

The problem was a series of bad computers. Finally received a good PCM and all is well. Only took a little over 2 months to figure it out.

2007 Ford Edge PCM failure and Coil melting

While driving, car started sputtering and vibrating. I made it to my Mechanic, barely. He said coil melted and that it continues to fire and sends a surge of power back to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). He stated it was a faulty design in the PCM because when the coil goes out it should stop firing. He said that only the ford dealership could fix it and said to have it towed. If I tried to drive it any more it could catch fire and burn to the ground.


I towed to Ford and they stated this was a common problem and they have a TSB on how to fix. They stated there was a design issue with the PCM in Ford/Mercury/Lincoln in some range of years that included 2007 edge. They had 3 or 4 in the shop right then to fix the same issue. The estimate to fix was $2,958.


This is NOT normal wear and tear and a design issue. If a coil burns out, it is a $100 fix (very easy do it yourself) or $200 at the shop. Instead, the PCM fries all the coils and its self and you have to replace it all with their new and improved model they came up with.

2007 Ford Edge PCM and coil melting very similar to what Shappard1 reported with the same repair. Cost is over $2500 to get this vehicle back on the road for what amounts to a failed coil ($150) on one cylinder that in turns fried two other coils and the PCM. Apparently there is a ford TSB that recommends replacing the PCM, all the coils and all of the spark plugs when this occurs.

07 Edge pcm

I know this is an old thread but I too had a coil go bad and fried the pcm. I got and new pcm and had it reprogramed and flashed and it worked perfect for three months and now it's in the shop again for same thing. At this time the pcm has been sent back under warranty to be tested.

Update

I sent the pcm back to Flagship1 for repair under warranty and after more than a month and lots of emails they sent it back unrepaired and stated that my car "fried" the pcm and that and the fact that I did not follow the Ford tsb stating to change all plugs and cops along with new pcm. My mechanic knew about the tsb and did that before installing the new(under warranty) pcm and had the pats keys reprogramed and it ran ok for three months.
My wiring was checked three times before and after last failure and nothing is amiss.
My car has been at the shop so long we had to buy a different vehicle. Flagship1 inc. in New York won't work with me at all and the warranty isn't worth anything. I'm now looking for a used one so I can get this car back on the road. It was a great car from 09 thru half of 2017 when the pcm went out. I can't believe it can't be resolved.
