I decided to delete th egr on My 05 and provably will be buying a kit from sinister. The other day while searching old threads about egr kits and flushing the cooling system I read about someone installing an external/remote oil cooler, this sounds fantastic since the egr and oil cooler on my 05 already failed and the entire system is contaminated with oil and when I flush it (tap water with simple green-distilled water-distilled water and restore-distilled water until water is clear) I may or may not get all the debris out and in a few months may be doing a new oil cooler again. I searched and the price for one of this coolers is around $1K, it didn't look like it was worth all that money for a cooler and a couple of hoses with adapters, what is the opinion of the 6.0 owners here?
The factory oil cooler is perfectly fine, just do a thorough flush of the coolant system. The BPD is a nice setup but tons of money. Your biggest issue would be monitoring your engine, buy a scangauge2, or application for your smart phone. Typically an oil cooler will rupture due to a wide spread between your coolant temp and oil temp. Coolant filter is also not a bad idea.
First, thanks for the answer. I already have a coolant filter for a couple of years but the egr cooler and oil cooler have failed recently, I parked the truck since and I'm trying to figure which way to go and what to get to do this once only but keep reading about many having issues with the oil cooler even after a flush (yes I know it musty be done right and have an idea of all the steps involved) and in My case I can only really flush the system after I put all the new parts back together. The only thing I can do before installing the new parts is flush with a hose the rad, back flush the heater core and flush the heads or block through the degas bottle (I already have the fomoto valves for the plugs on either side) then there isn't much more I can do.
You can still sort of do a flush, by draining the coolant, topping off with tap water, drain it and repeat. Even after that, just leave all the drains open and just let the water flow in the degas.
I would pull the thermostat, rinse the coolant system with only1 outlet open and then all outlets open until clear flowing, mix up about 10 gallons of hot degreaser, pour in about 5 gallons and let sit. Who knows how long. Drain and repeat without a rinse. Maybe do out three times to help get all the oil out. I don't know that vc9 or Restore or Restore plus (rust remover and decreased) will work without getting to 150 degrees.
Then rinse clear again and backwash the heater core out of the system by removing the supply line too.
I think that's the best you can do before installing the new oil cooler.

Thanks for the good advice, the restore is for after I have it all back together minus the thermostat I will flush with simple green and then with restore doing several times until water comes clear then finally after I have enough distilled water in the system drain and add elc1 coolant.
