I spent a few days soaking and tapping the front four stakes to persuade them out of the pockets they had occupied for decades and after much discussion between the stakes and me they finally decided to leave their old home place. Upon removal I discovered they were previously red-orange.
I had to break out my crude welding skills to repair a split on the back of the bed. I guess stress and rust had opened the steel where it formed a 90 degree bend. Thankfully there are grinders for hiding the types of welds that I put down.
I had considered using a wire wheel on the flatbed to strip it but then reality stepped in and I realized that I would never get into all the corners even if I survived the flying wire spears. I took the bed to a local shop that sandblasts and they stripped it clean of all rust and applied epoxy primer and black paint. Those guys are just great!
It should be protected for another 68 years. I opted to leave the pits and dings because you can't duplicate hard-earned character.

I can say once again after a very long pause that we are making progress again. My (slow but thorough) machine shop guy called today to let me know he discovered a couple of lifters (tappets) that weren't as good as we would like. Now I am in search of at least a couple lifters. I thought I had a full spare set but they are nowhere to be found and I have all the 226 parts in one tidy spot. If anyone has a few spares laying around please let me know.

Why do your lifters have an adjuster on them? I'm used to 215 / 223 lifters that are solid with no adjustment.
edit: Wow I feel like an idiot. I somehow totally missed this as a flathead and thought you had a valve in head motor. Never mind my comment, the H and M motors had adjustable lifters. Be glad they did, the G motors you had to grind the valve into lash, like the flathead V8 motors.
