Looking into buying this one

So far here's what I know, according to the owner:
  • It's a 1972-73 truck
  • Gas engine
  • 5 speed transmission/2 speed electric rearend
  • Engine has been recently rebuilt
  • Dual Axle with a Lift Axle
  • Cab is in decent shape
  • Bed needs patching but will hold a load
  • Owner says the hydraulic system works properly and has no leaks
I've talked to the guy once, and he told me to call back tomorrow when he's at home so he can give me the VIN, and more info (And try to identify what engine.).

He's pretty set at $1,400 after coming down from $1,550. He said it runs and drives, but has a leaking airbag.

So far from the pics here's where I stand as a heavy truck repair guy:
  • Wiring harness in the dash is a mess, will need to be sorted out and labeled for sure. (I despise rats nests of wiring)
  • Possible 2-3 tires being replaced fairly soon
  • The bed has rusted out holes that will need to be patched.
  • Bed also needs to be sandblasted and patched, along with paint.
  • Cab looks fair, but needs sandblasting and paint
  • The guy said the 2 speed electric setup doesn't work (But from what I've read in this forum, it's stupidly simple to repair and inexpensive on parts.
  • Owner says it comes with 2 new Air Brake Chambers, that the ones on it look original (So that's less $$ I have to worry about if 1 fails)
So here's the pics... Tell me what you guys think.

So far it looks to be a simple fix truck. THe owner said it was used to haul dirt for a new home being built and after it was completed, he simply bought a newer/bigger truck.

I'm wanting to buy this truck for my business (Just started it back in March 2013) to haul dirt, gravel, etc as a starting point, and then add a trailer and some other equipment later.

So that's the facts I know so far, with just the pics the owner has taken and me not seeing the truck in person.

But he is certain it will run and drive. (I'm sorta curious/worried about no aircleaner )

If I get this, and a haul for it, it'll be done via a loan from a local loan company if:

-The truck checks out to my specs
-The haul I'm trying to get goes through
-The loan company will approve me

I know this isn't a business that's year round, but in the spring (Less than 6 months away) it'll be a profitable thing for me.

Well, for $1400 it doesn't look horrible. If it runs and drives and dumps it seems it is worth that.

Looks like a 391 ci motor? Won't be a powerhouse but should do okay(it will be very thirsty though). Some 1/8" steel plate thrown in the bed will make it usable and not loose gravel on the way to the job.

Engine recently rebuilt? Don't look like it and for $1400 I would not expect it. Great if it is! I'm thinking maybe someone replaced it with a take out? Pull the dipstick and see if the oil is clean. Get an air cleaner on it somehow.

Looks to have a version of a 600 Holley on it. Should not be hard to freshen up if it is needing it.

Are those tube tires? Can't see if it has lock ring or not. If original, it will be tube type. You can switch them to 22.5 tubeless by just buying rims and tires(they bolt on the same).

I had a similar truck with a 391, very underpowered on the highway but pretty much tolerable in town. Yes, very thirsty! Now I have one with a 7.8 diesel and it`s so much better both with fuel economy and a lot more power.

I called about it and the guy tended to be kinda sketchy about his "facts".

No thanks. I'll pass.

Morris, you can delete this thread if you feel inclined to do so.

Thanks to everyone who gave input!

Oh ok, just didn't figure it'd be of any actual use, wasting bandwidth..

Still looks like quite a lot of truck for $1400 even if the history is suspect. My recent purchase of a F600 4x4 came without an air cleaner also....I thought what kind of idiot would have the air cleaner lost, operating without one. Turns out it was not for long, no oil burning. A quick compression check would determine if the truck had been sucking dust/dirt for long.

Then again, patience will always allow for a better deal to come along. Good luck.

In the future remember the 2 speed rear end is an easy fix. First place to start is the switch on the gear shifter. It's electrical and usually the first thing to go. For what he was asking... if it ran you could have made money on it . Forget painting just run it till it dropped. Oh course with it being gas, more than half your profits would have gone to the gas station.

I really needed something more turn key.
