Can someone tell me the wiring colors/codes for a fuel pump on a 91 explorer xlt, auto, 4 wheel drive? We changed the gas tank out for a new(er) one, and it wouldn't start. So we put the old one back in, and it still won't start. I need to see if the pump is getting power, but I don't know which wire is which...
There is a sender, a ground, and power. Only one wire will have power, so test all three against a ground. However starting at the pump is a little backwards. Test for power at the relay, then test again at the inertial switch. The wire colors coming out of the switch will be the same at the pump. You can also hear if the pump is getting power. When you first turn the key to on, without starting the vehicle, you should hear the pump come on. If you don't its not getting power, no need to test at the pump until you verify that every stage up to that point is functional.
And if you are not getting power to the pump through the wiring, next spots I would check are the Intertia Switch (known to be finicky) located on the passenger foot kick panel in the cab, and Fuel Pump Relay under the hood in the power distribution power box.
I don't have a service manual for 1991, but do for 1992. Your 1991 is likely similar. For 1992, there are 4 wires to the fuel pump. Wire color pink/black is the feed to the fuel pump from the inertia switch. The Yellow/White wire is the wire to the fuel gauge. Wires Black and Orange are grounds for the pump and sender respectively. They both tie to a common chassis ground G104.
If your wire colors are the same, it would be a pretty safe assumption the functions are the same as well.
