Possible new toys, 56 F-350 question

Well, when it rains, it pours old trucks right now it seems. Recently managed to barter my way into a 48 F-1 chassis/body (still have to go pick up), and now I just had a 1956 F-350 offered to me.

I have yet to see it in person, but its definitely a field find (definitely needs fenders, but cab/doors is all there and good). My question, does this look to be the original 272 Y-block?

Going out this weekend to take a look for myself, sounds like if I wanna haul it away, its mine =P

Oh, and should I add that there are rumors there may be a wrecker body out in the weeds near it that would be included =)

Looks like the 1956 needs lots of work. I don't think the y block is original as it doesn't have the crossover exhaust and has a 2100 style Holley carb. Would have to swap axles to get away from the IMO useless 6 bolt pattern.

WOW...now that's what I call fender rot. I have seen a lot of rusted out fenders in my day but I have to say that those are the worst. Save the headlight buckets and trim...they make a great upgrade to the bug-eyed slant cab lights.

Yeah, didn't figure the fenders were salvageable, waiting to see it in person to see if this is going to be worth trying to save, or part out. The cab/doors/glass/interior are all in decent shape, so we'll see. I've saved worse. Hopefully can get some better pics too, but it's sitting in head high weeds

And look at the roof, just above the drip molding. I suspect the cab is as bad as the fenders. Almost looks like the steering wheel is at a non stock angle where someone tried to get the column and box to clear the exhaust manifold. Save the 350 emblems. The six lug wheels are in demand. Script bed? Save it. If the doors are salvageable, save them. Depending on how far you had to haul it and how hard it was to get onto the trailer, it may be worth draggin' home. Restoration project?

Hmm, I'm definitely going to have to do some looking over with that engine, could be fun if it really is a 292 (and running/rebuildable) =)

And for now, I'm not in any hurry to sell it off, thinking it could be fun to restore and leave reasonably unmolested, use as a helper around the farm.

I wish it had an original bed, but as of now has whats left of home made flatbed. my girlfriend (the truck is on her folks farm) says she thinks there is some type of wrecker bed setup out by it, who knows

I see there is a factory signal light switch on the column as well.

I'll be getting to look the truck over tomorrow, plan on knocking down some grass and taking lots of pictures. Want to get casting numbers off block/heads, get the VIN etc. Looking like it may have been a factory upgraded truck. If that the case, definitely looking at a restoration =)

Well as I kinda expected the truck was a basket case. Body is shot, and only a handful of parts worth saving before its going to make a trip to the scrapper (yes I am going to strip anything that may have any value).

The engine on the other hand has perked my interest. Found the casting numbers on the block and turns out its 59-60 292. The thing is that same casting number was used on the 59-60 Mercury 312's... and the truck has one Mercury valve cover (the other is a T-bird cover).. Hoping I can get the truck stripped down and the engine on a stand so I can check some of the internal casting number and see if I have a 312 =) Could be fun to rebuild and toss in my 48 F-1 project
