Hi, I just bought a 56 f100 with a 390 and c6 auto trans. I found my engine codes and am now not sure if I have a 390? Any help would be appreciated.

Code on intake manifold - C8AE then just below that 9425-F
Code on block on passenger side - C6ME-A
Code on block on drivers side next to oil filter - 7F20 - this one is a bit hard to read

Not sure what all the codes mean, but from what I can find it says 428 Police interceptor? I've read that it's hard to know for sure without measuring the stroke, but would these numbers be on a 390 at all? I also saw the drilled holes near the bottom of the block. Is this a mark of a 428?

Codes have always been a hassle for me. As you know at one look they all look the same. Unfortunatlly you have to measure it. Maybe stick a rod down there and measure the stroke. The old story to pass off a 352 with 390 valve covers
who knows?? (I've seen that old trick before)

 

Is there a tag on the distributor? That's the one you are looking for, it gives you all the information.

 

Distributors along with valve covers get changed around, no proof that way . You have to measure the stroke though the spark plug hole or pull the heads to really know , bore is the same 360 / 390 . I believe the 428 is bigger bore , I had one but don't remember for sure .__

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Thanks for the replies. I also posted this in the engine forum and got the code decoded, but as most of you know it's still a lot of options. I just have to measure the stroke. I have pictures of the codes, but not the holes I noticed. I will try to crawl back under the truck today to see if I can snap a pic of what I saw.

These old engines is all new to me so it will be a learning expierence. I just kinda want to know what I have so I know where I'm starting from. I ordered a bunch of parts from summit assuming it was a 390 4V. I ordered a new roller cam, aluminum rocker assembly, ededbrock rpm intake, edelbrock carb, new MSD dist and coil and gaskets and bolts all around, Looking at some sanderson headers that will fit on the 56.

I'm just hoping that if it is a 390 2V it's not a waste to put all the new parts on it if it's not the 4V. And I was kinda not wanting to pull off the heads if I did not have too. They seem to be leak free so I was hoping to just pull the parts I have too and change a few gaskets (manifold, valve covers, oil pan, possibly rear main if leaking from there).

Anyone here ever do the upgrades I'm doing on a 2V or 4V? If so how was it? What kind of power did you get?

Just a heads up.

The FE intake is a bear to get to seal around the back.
It is one place that ya have to use RTV.

 

really only difference between the 2v and 4v is wether it has a 2 bbl carb or a factory 4bbl. i think the 4v has slightly bigger valves. its not like there were 4 valves per cylinder like on some of the newer engines. best thing for them is carb, cam intake and headers. and power numbers are possible in the 550 range when theyre built right....ive seen more out of FE head engines, but not too often......
