I came back from vacationing at North Carolina's Outer Banks and with a light load in the bed and three of us in the cab only got 17.5 mpg (not complaining). Speeds were mostly in the 55-70 MPH range, and we did hit serious traffic the last couple of hours or so. My buddy and his wife has a 2013 4x4 XLT Crew Cab 5.0, and he told me he also got 17.5 MPG. I go to the Outer Banks almost every year and always clock my fuel mileage and as a reference, my '05 got 17.2, my '10 got 19.2 and had higher hopes for my '13. I know I have a long 157'' wheel base truck with 4WD and big tow mirrors hanging in the wind with 3:73's, so that will always be my killer for economy, IMO. Just thought I would share some real world numbers.
The other little things to check are proper inflation of the tires. I really think the mirrors are pretty insignificant compared to the size of your truck going down the road.
Hello, thought I would add my results from my road trip. New 2013 fx4 Eco boost, did a 5000km round trip drive to Toronto .23mpg avg, Over 650 miles per tank. I was impressed.

Yes indeed the tires were properly inflated. I'm sure the traffic didn't help the MPG either.

I totally agree there...it is just amazing when you actually try to drive the speed limit on cruise control how MANY other people decide to do the same thing or just a tad slower...then you have to go off cruise control then reengage....UGH Meanwhile your average takes the hit especially when you have been runnig it for a long time it takes FOREVER to come back up!!
Can you tell me more about this load in the bed? Weight means very little when it comes to highway fuel economy, but if it was something that rose higher than the bed sides it could have cost you. Stop and go will kill your efficiency as well.

Very true Tim, but this is often misused in a given situation. Power only takes fuel when it's being produced. It only takes 60-70 HP from the engine to push the truck down the highway regardless of what the engine is capable of. His EcoBoost was making just as much power as any other engine would have. The difference is parasitic losses within the engine, and typically the smaller 6-cylinder engine has less than the larger V8s. Of course a pair of turbos change this a bit depending on boost and load conditions.
I averaged 21 MPGs running dead empty back from OH at 70 MPH. This was trying out premium fuel, but after a couple of tanks back and forth I'm convinced that it didn't have much of an increase over 87 octane.
Just completed a drive in Florida from Orlando to Jacksonville in my 2013 5.0 4x4 with 4,000 miles 3.55 gearing screw and got 21.8 mpg with the cruise set at 70 mph. It was about a 150 mile drive and it was all highway. This was a hand calculation. The truck computer said 19.2. I filled it up at the beginning and at the end of this trip. Very pleased. Of course being in Florida the road was very flat with no hills.
Yesterday I made a day of it and ran down to the Delta farmland in Louisiana. I had a 30 minute meeting 268 miles away and nobody knew how or wanted to learn how to conference me in on the phone. That's besides the point.
I was tickled to death to figure out after I got home that my 5.4 SCREW 4X4 got 16.8 MPG 'till I read this post. All highway, down there and back. Cooler full of iced down water in the back was the load.
I have been meticulously tracking my fuel average going to and from work while driving on cruise control at 65 mph. I got my all time best so far (truck has 4200 miles) Going to work I got a best of 19.5 mpg and coming home I also got a best of 21.4!! One way to work is 33 miles and I have hills and one steep grade to climb (approx. 6%). Coming home I am on a downgrade a lot of the way after getting over that 6% grade. There's some real world for you!
