Part info request –Rebuild automatic steering column shifter assembly
<O</O
Hello,
<O</O
Did some searching of the forums and found some very useful schematics listing column part numbers and such, thanks for this everyone. I was hoping that someone could list, specifically, what parts they replaced to rebuild/tighten up a loose automatic shifter column. I was told by my local mechanic that the issue is with the shifter itself and not the linkage or steering shaft.<O></O>
The symptoms:<O</O
1. Doesn’t shift in to park easily.<O</O
2. Loose almost gliding gear selection – it doesn’t pop out of gear, just not much distinction when selecting any of the gears. <O</O
3. Overall looseness of the column shifter.<O</O
My Truck:
<O</O
1966 F100 custom cab, 2 wheel drive, long bed, 352, 14 bolt Cruise o matic Auto trans.
<O</O
It’s usable and should be ok for a while but i'd like to eventually rebuild it.
<O</O
Appreciate any info you guys can provide!
<O</O
Thanks,<O</O

1966 F100 352 MX Cruise-O-Matic.
1) If the shift collar was bad, you wouldn't be able to shift into any gear.
Pot metal shift collar has an internal bridge that connects it to the shift tube. Over time, the bridge begins to crack, eventually breaks off. Now you aren't going anywhere.
You can buy a new shift collar from Ford, but it's a replacement (D5TZ-7228-A). 1965/72 original collar (see pic) has the dial pointer made as part of it.
The replacement collar has a slot in it that the separate plastic pointer slips into. Pointer included with shift collar.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Shift tube (7212 - barely discernible in pic) has a 'sweated on' rectangular piece that locks it into the collar.
Piece falls off down inside the column, it came be reinstalled by spot welding it back on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Bottom of the steering column underneath the hood has the A/T selector lever (7302 in pic) that the shift rod from the trans attaches to. This lever has a rubber bushing and insulator.
Bushing age cracks, shift lever wobbles between gears. C5TZ-7343-A .. Bushing & Insulator Kit-includes 2 bushings/insulators, as it's also used with 3 M/T that has 2 levers.
Obsolete. dozens available NOS
------------------------------------
4) People place the shift lever into Park before setting the parking brake, causing the truck to roll...just enough...that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up tight.
Now the shift lever has to be YANKED out of Park and sooner or later, the shift gate aka detent (C5TZ-7A216-A - located on the bottom of the upper flange) that the shift lever tab fits into, snaps off.
Detent obsolete, not reproduced, no one has any NOS
Note: Numbers shown in parts catalog pics are only the basic part numbers. Text section required to get the complete part numbers by adding the apropos prefix & suffix.
