1970 F-100 Stepside has a new home

Whenever my wife is out of town I get myself into trouble and buy another car or motorcycle. She's used to it by now and I never keep them for too long. I like to find neglected rides and bring them back to life. At least my wife knows that I'm in the garage . I've been looking at F-100's for a while and have missed out on a couple over the last year. I spotted this truck on Craigslist and it was just what I was looking for. I wasn't going to go 100 miles to kick tires so I called the owner to find out if it was roadworthy. No way, parked in the desert since '98 the tires were shot and who knows what else. I started to talk myself out of it when my friend said, "Lets go"! He had cash for me to use and we could get there in time to swap out the tires and fire it up. So off we went. Got there with a spare battery and some gas. Started right up with the manual prime but no gas at the carb. Too late to buy a fuel pump so one more trip was in order. Made the deal on the truck, brought the wheels home and came back 2 days later with a new fuel pump. Had it running (and idling!) in less than an hour and off we go. Made it home without missing a beat. Gotta love those 302's.
I'm kinda liking this truck though, a good cleaning and some maintenance and this will make a good shop truck. My neighbors are going to love it

Oops, looks like they are called a Flareside, not a stepside.
I'm a newbie alright. That's what I came here for, to learn.

Yes, they are called flaresides. Stepside is a chevy term. Some purists will be quick to jump on that correction. Welcome to FTE, there is a wealth of knowledge here, and many great people.

I gave it a good bath today. The desert dirt didn't want to let go but it couldn't stand up to simple green and a pressure washer .
Pics to follow. The brakes are going to get done before anything else. The master cylinder was dry but the brakes pumped up enough for the ride home. That's not good enough for daily driving though. I have to decide between fixing what's there or doing a disc upgrade. That all depends on what I find at the junkyard tomorrow. Gotta get as much done as I can before the boss gets home

You found yourself a nice looking truck. You might have trouble letting that one go but you should find plenty of takers if you get to that point. Well done!

Don't worry, I found some rust today.
On the drivers side below the vent on the kick panel.
Those areas were filled with leaves on both sides and the left side had rusted through just below the black plastic vent. How do all the leaves get in there? Poked a screwdriver through and got it to come out on the floor.
The other area is below the passenger rocker area. You can see it from under the car. That's all I found today but there's still time!
Changed the oil and removed all the crap that had been installed over the years. It's really amazing to see how different people do things
The original color is "New Lime". I'm going to see if I can bring that color back from under the crappy paint job that is on top. I can rub a wet cloth on there and the green starts coming through.

Still waiting on those pics you promised.
Any truck with this many years is bound to have a few hidden gotcha's.

Sorry for the delay. Here's the engine before and after:

And the interior cleans up pretty easy with a garden hose!

These are the rust areas I found:

Here's the right side rocker from top and bottom

And where the rockin' 8 track used to be, ugh:

And this pic is for "Area351"

I'm lucky I made it back from the desert because it conked out on me today. I think it was the dirty air cleaner and left over bad gas that finally made the carb say it had enough. I replaced a wheel cylinder and the brakes work pretty well considering. It seems like it's running hot too but the temp & gas gauge are NG for now.The disc upgrade can wait since there's too many other things to get right.

That rig musta been parked under a tree cuz the only way those vent bowls rot out is by being constantly wet with a pile of mulch in them.

Do my eyes deceive me or are there no cracks in that steering wheel? They usually separate where the spokes emanate from the center hub.

Its interior color looks really familiar....it's sorta yellow.. sorta light green.... New Lime?!
