truck won't start help me narrow down possible problems

My 95 short bed 4x4 didn't start this morning. Every now and then I have to cycle the key 2or3 times to get it to fire but this morning I did it at least 20 times and no go. It has a brand new battery and fuel filter. When I turn the key half way I hear the fuel pump kick on every time but still won't fire. What could be wrong?

Does the pump shut off after a few seconds, when cycling from Off to Run?

Have you checked for spark?

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Stick a fuel pressure gauge on it, cycle the pump in question (front/rear), post your fuel pressure readings here. I think Autozone will rent a fuel pressure tester if you need one.

Yeah it's supposed to work that way, but just because the pump runs doesn't mean it's pumping correctly.

I only have one tank.. Never checked pressure before is it an easy procedure? About a week ago I had the fuel filter changed someone at my job said there might be air trapped in the line that finally made it's way to the front

You are correct, the pump is supposed to shut off after a few seconds. But a common symptom of the pump running continuously is a sure sign of a bad PCM (computer).

Or a bad pump too.

Could it be the coil pack. I read somewhere that the truck will shake upon idol or go up and down while standing still. I noticed it idoling really bad when filling up a few nights ago. Now won't start.. Any thoughts?

The root cause could be any number of things. Jumping to conclusions will only cost you $money$.

first i turned the key half way to get the fuel pump to kick on... it did then turned off like normal after a few seconds. I checked the pressure in the lines by putting a screw driver into the schratter (spelling?) valve up from and gas shot out like a water fountain. so its getting pressure and no air was trapped. So i replaced the coil pack which looked a little rusty and it started right up. So i guess that was my problem. It doesnt idol rough anymore either which is good. Hopefully that is all for now.

There should be a valve on the Fuel Rail where you can insert a pen or screw driver and you should be able to see fuel shoot from the valve, that would verify fuel to the system, but not pressure. How does the spark plugs look on the truck? Lets start there and see what happens and give more info on what you find, lets get this truck started. Also just wondering does your truck have the cut off safety switch on the floor, there is one on some models that shuts fuel off to the system and it could have been accidentally tapped and shut off the fuel.
