I have a 65 f100 with a very nice running FE motor.Well at least until about a week ago. I went for about a 6 mile ride and about 3 miles down the road the truck started running a little rough,At this point I had arrived at my destination
and shut the truck off. About 30 minutes later I drove home and the truck started running hotter than normal as was pulling into my home the temp gauge was on the H.When it cooled down, I checked the oil and there was coolant in the oil.I pulled all the spark plugs and cranked it over with my remote switch and got a face full of coolant from #8 cyl. I know running hot
will cause problems with head gaskets but has any one experienced a head gasket going bad first then causing the engine to get hot ? And has anyone had
the metal band of the gasket look like this one? What is a better Gasket than this FelPro that went bad ? All recommendations appreciated, thank you
Scott
Could be a hand full of things that can cause head gasket failure.
Do you see by the cylinder anywhere the gasket failed? Its unlikely the gasket failed on its own. Modern gaskets are much better than the stuff they made 50 years ago. Is there a crack in the cylinder wall?
I would bank that it could be water pump or radiator that caused your motor to overheat. I would have the radiator cleaned and tested. I would change the water pump. I would also replace the radiator cap.
I would pull the motor, tear it down, clean it up, check it over closely, put it back together, and run it, to be honest. Its unlikely it sustained any real damage.
These old motors are tough. I blew the entire side of the block out on my original 352, (rod failure) and it still ran long enough to get me to a place where I could safely pull over about 5 miles down the road.
After closer examination I discovered gasket had small ***** in it which eventually led to complete failure.I cleaned everything up,had heads checked and milled .004 to get clean surface.New gaskets. 100 bucks and a sore back
(PITA putting heads and manifold when in vehicle).Back on the road.Performs good again.Starting to love these FE motors.
My guess is someone dropped one corner of the head onto the gasket.... sure did knock a notch it it, maybe they had the head hanging on an engine hoist or cherry picker to save their poor aching back.
Thats exactly what I think happened.Just one more reason to do everything your self even if it is a PITA and results in skinned knuckles or sarcastic comments from people that say its not worth it take it to shop.Satisfaction as
well as the disappointments from screwing up stuff is all a learning experience
and good thing in my opinion.
