91 F150 odo/speedo not working

I recently bought a 91 F150. The odometer and speedometer doesn't work at all. It's at 44112, which could be 44112, 144112 or 244112 I guess, however there is an old oil change sticker in the window dated from 2000 with the same mileage, so apparently the odometer has not worked for a long time. I've searched this site and haven't come up with any posts regarding this issue. It's not completely necessary at this point, but I would like to keep track of mileage (the fuel gauge for the front tank doesn't work, but it does for the back tank) and how much I drive it. I'm a novice, so any advice, no matter how simple would be appreciated!

The OP's truck uses a cable driven speed/odometer. Check the gear on the end of the cable at the transmission or transfer case.

That sensor on top of the rear axle is for RABS operation only on the OP's truck. It has nothing to do with the speedometer/odometer or supplying the VSS signal to the PCM (computer).

1992 and later trucks use the single rear axle mounted sensor for RABS operation. The same signal is also sent to the PSOM behind the instrument cluster for buffering for use with the speed/odometer and VSS signal to the PCM.

Thanks I'll try replacing the cable gear! I'm still trying to figure out a headlight problem, so I won't be getting to this as soon as I thought! Thanks for all the replies!

Thanks Aztekxtreme! I did try that because a lot of people have said that fixed the problem, but it didn't for me. So I'm still searching. There's no power to the fuse #4 which is for the dome light, but the dome light works, so I'm thinking that there are some wires crossed somewhere. Thank you!

This thread is over 1 year old....

And my reply is the same as Post#3: The OP's truck uses a cable driven speed/odometer.

There is no fuse for the speedometer/odometer like the 1992 and newer trucks with LCD odometer display.

im having similar problems with my sport trac. the speedO wont work and it wont shift out of 1st gear auto matically as it should. but if i pop it in low 1 the 2 and drive, it does shift. i changed the vss cause thats what the scan said and still didnt work. so i went and exchanged the vss i had just bought for a new one thinking it might be defected, and still the same results. i checked all the fuses and relays and they all checked out good. i cant seem to find the vss buffer module. any one know where it might be. i did find a white plastic box by the blower but it wans the heater doorman blender.
