Hi folks....

I have a 1970 F100 with 302ci and 3-speed transmission (C code - light duty). While it is only weekend driven, I find myself frequently on highways going to shows, etc. and find the rev of the engine in 3rd gear pretty annoying at anything approaching highway speeds. This truck definitely needs another gear to make highway cruising more comfortable.

As I am going to be pulling the engine/transmission to fix some serious oil leaks, change the clutch and perform some underhood/engine detailing, I was thinking about a potential transmission swap.

From what I've read in these forums, the Borg-Warner T85N was the O/D transmission supplied in the 67-71 model years. I would like to confirm a few items:

1) Was the T85N supplied as the 3-speed O/D transmission for 302ci engines in 1970?

2) Can the T85N be a direct bolt-in replacement for the standard 3-speed - in other words, no shift linkage mods, different mounts req., driveshaft mods, etc.? Or do you need other parts?

3) I realize you need more than the tranny to make the package work - you need a kickdown switch, overdrive handle and wiring to solenoid, etc. What is the best way to get this package? Find a scrap 1970 F100 with a 302 and T85N and salvage all parts necessary? Would other model years/engine size combinations work?
