New to forums and looking for advice. Just got 1979 F-250 4x4 300 I6 with 4 speed. Approx 82000 mi on it but truck has been sitting for a couple of years. Drove about 200 mi on highway to get home 2 weeks ago and then about another 100mi local and ran like a top. Last weekend took it out to get some parts, drove about 10 minutes, and started losing power. Tried to accelerate, and motor would just crap out. Checked under hood, discovered distributor loose! Timed it, tightened everything up, put new air and oil breather filters on, and everything seemed fine. Took it out this morning, drove about 20 min same problem again. No power under load. Will idle OK, but touch throttle and it bogs out.
My thinking so far is carb, fuel, vacuum, or combination. Has new fuel pump and filter. Used a whole can of carb cleaner, and 2 bottles of fuel treatment in 1 1/2 tanks of gas.
Any ideas where to start looking?
Thanks.....
Blockage in the fuel system starting with the tank is a good place to start and end up at the inlet screen in the carb if it has one. Since it has sat for two years the carb could probably use a good boil-out and rebuild kit.
Have that on list of things to do, trying to get ID numbers off carb to get correct rebuild kit. Cleaned fuel lines (pump to carb) when replaced filter and no blockage found.
Grab the air filter housing and gently rock it back and forth to see if the carburetor is loose. There are two 1/2" nuts holding it down and they tend to vibrate loose, causing a vacuum leak.
Since the truck is not young [] and has been sitting for 2 years, check all vacuum lines and look for open vacuum ports on the carburetor and manifold tree. Don't forget to check the PCV hoses as well as the brake booster.
These six cylinder engines definitely do not like vacuum leaks!
It sounds like best course will be start at tanks, drop both and clean, then work my way forward! Will update as time allows.
Thanks all for advice so far......
