'02 Expedition Air Shocks Lowering

For the last 2 days, the shock air bags have been empty after sitting overnight. Resetting the switch under the passenger dash turns the compressor on and they refill.

We've never had any problems with the suspension until now.

I know there is a switch to sense the height of the vehicle and kick on the compressor, but I'm not sure how to test it and see if that's the problem.

Any ideas where to start?

Thank you,

Jason

you can start by going to the local junkyard and getting 4 of the stock coil/springs off an Expedition.......I got mine for $200 and put them on myself( Expy 2005)........I don't notice a difference in the ride and I never have to worry about those stupid air shocks

they are great when its a brand new vehicle but are nothing but trouble later on

There is a reason why you don't see air suspension on Fords newer trucks and SUVs.....PITA!!!!!!

Some people, myself included, enjoy having the air suspension.

(Keep in mind that the AS will not rise or lower while any door is open, unless there is a leak in the system.)

What happens if you get in, start it, and shift to Drive, does the compressor kick in and pump up the system?

Yes, the compressor kicks in after the engine is started, but only after the reset switch is tripped.

My guess is the sensor switch is bad, but it's just a guess. The shocks lower, but the switch doesn't read "too low" and kick on compressor. If the switch was bad, how does the compressor know to stop pumping.

That switch is not a reset switch, it's a simple on/off switch. By turning the system off and then on, you are resetting the air suspension control module. I would suspect the module as being the source of the problem. If it was a height sensor, then the compressor would never turn on because it would have no signal from the sensor telling it to pump up the air bags.

I agree.

No problems with my air suspension at present, so I haven't had to shop pricing. When (if) the time comes, how in your experience do system repairs compare to conversion costs?

Oh it's definitely less costly to convert over to a standard suspension. But then again if cost was the issue, instead of a Lincoln Navigator I'd be driving a Hyundai and getting 35 MPG.
