Brake overhaul

The front brake caliper overhaul started.
Finished the passenger side, just the tedium of bleeding to be done.

New slide pins and boots, clips and springs.
New pads and a coat of caliper paint.

Steel braided lines as well.

That's a bit horny Brian B, nice work mate .

Did you measure the rotors?
What brand of pads did you use?
Did you have any shims on the pads?

Blue,
The rotors showed no sign of damage, no scuff or grooves.
Measured 38mm +/- 0.25mm at several points.
The pads are "adb" brand, sourced from Bretts Truck Parts.
No shimms on the pads, there were none on the old ones and
none were supplied with the new ones.
Used Bendix brand brake lube on the slide pins.

Yes the rotors are in good nick , i had two shims on each pad , i presumed they where stock.
Where did you end up getting your slide pins and boots?

Bought "Dorman", made in China, parts from Summit Racing as I was
getting stuff from them anyway and their pricing was OK.
I figured even the Chinese could not get a simple steel pin wrong.
They seem to be well machined, no idea how good the steel is, only
time will tell.

No, the pins came with new bolts only.
You need the hardware kit to get the boots.
The following is the Summit details of the two kits needed
to do the calipers.
Prices are US dollars.

DHB-HW5072 Disc Brake Caliper Bolt or Pin
$6.97

DHB-HW5660 Disc Brake Hardware Kit
$24.97

To do both calipers you need two of the 5072 kits and one of the 5660 kits.

Electric fans

Spotted this at Summit Racing

http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/flx-272/overview/

Liked the idea but did not like the price.
At the current exchange rate with freight I doubt there would
be much change from $1,000AU.

I reckon I can make one for less than half that.

I will do some thinking and see what I can come up with.

You should be able to buy two pusher fans here for half that price, and make up the sheet metal your self, what are you building?

Going to do away with the stock fan and see if two 14" electrics
will do the job.

Should not be to hard, the fans are $102 each, that should be
the major expense.

If they don't cut it I can always replace the stock setup.

Hey Brian, have you done the math on how much air the electric fans will move?

I know you use your truck to tow a caravan, and I assume in hot weather, so its a strong consideration.

I know the stock fan on the 6.0l diesels can move around 20,000CFM, and I assume the 7.3l's fan is in the same ballpark. Getting electric fans to move that amount of air will be nigh on impossible and/or use a lot of current. You also need to consider how they rate air movement, the hotrod circles I have been in have suggested that aftermarket manufacturers don't rate the fans like OEM's do. The e-fan fitted to the Ford Taurus is widely regarded as the best available fan:
Taurus Fan Install

These fans can also be found (with a different shroud) on Volvo V70/S70's.

Anyway - what did you want to achieve with the e-fan/s?

Brian B , I'm afraid BigF350 is correct , the stock fan can push about 16,000 cfm and the two pusher fans will only give you between 6-8000, cfm , and if you are towing in steep areas you will have some problems.
The pusher fans i mentions before i have them on my custom made transmission coolers , and work fine for that job.
They are thermostat controlled to come on when towing steep, and don't come on when on the level.
If you have something wrong with your clutch fan i think the stock will be your best option .
There are plenty of discussions on this subject on the other forums.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The main aim with the electrics was to get air movement
when idleing in city traffic, keeps the air conditioner happening.

As I said I can easily refit the standard fan if the electrics
dont cut it.

I can still use the electrics elsewhere so I have not wasted
too much cash.

I like to tinker and experiment with things, always have, and it's
how I have learned most of what I know.
Sometimes this is disasterous but fortunatley not often.

Learning the theory is good, I have not objection to book
learning at all but there is no substitute for hands on.

Just went back to the Summit site to refresh my memory as to
the specs were on their product.

It has two 15" fans and they claim that it shifts 6,200 cfm.

They claim it is suitable for the 7.3L as well as the V10 petrol
engine and 5.4L diesel.

I will see what claimed cfm of the 14" ones I intend to use is.

I have made a few measurements and I can fit the two 14" fans
and an additional 10" as well if the two 14" don't quite do the job.

As I said, thanks for your advice, it is appreciated and I am not
questioning your remarks, I just would like to try it out and see
how it goes.

As i said a few years ago i fitted two (2) 12'' pusher fans on the trans coolers i have in front of the radiator which i have thematically controlled and also have a manual override switch, these fans do add some cooling to the radiator in the slow traffic movement via the manual switch.
So yes what you are saying will work okay.

These are the two 12'' pusher fan i have fitted to the trans cooler and water to oil coolers
