My 1988 has push button 4X4 select that doesn't work very often, maybe once in a hundred times. Seems the times it has worked was when there has been a good rain or when it has been very humid. Suspect the added moisture is allowing an electrical connection better contact thus completing the circuit. Perhaps a bad ground? Anyway the vehicle has really begun to grow on me and I would like to pursue its full potential. Perhaps sink some cash in it.
That being said I need to ask a few questions:
1. Is it worth trying to troubleshoot the electrical system and if so, where can good documentation be aquired to guide the troubleshooting?
2. If it is too much to worry about (which I think it is because all other systems seem to work), then can the transfer case be swapped over from an electrical selection to a manual selection?
3. If it can be swapped, what transfer case works with 5.0L w/ A4OD and what besides the transfer case must be added?
I usually do things by feel and don't know specs or numbers, but
You might be able to get a shifter linkage from a bone yard and bolt it inplace of the electric motor. might be worth a try, if not then I beleive an NP205 should be able to fit and it might do you well, and also I think the NP 208 is the right one.
Good luck bro.
Dont even have to think about it get rid of the push button and put in the manuel lever. You can do it pretty cheap. Like a previuos post said got to the rebuild yard and get a used manuel linkage. This is just my opinion guys but I have seen and heard of to many problems with the push button 4x4 and automatic hubs. One of my buddies just bought a super clean 96 bronco and the first thing we will do is get rid of the push button and go to the lever. The auto hubs have already been swapped out for manuels.
Thanks, the manual shift was the way I was leaning because the automatic hubs had already been changed with manual hubs. The idea of swapping the electric motor with a manual linkage is an idea a I'd not thought of and if its possible it would be the best idea.
Another question I have to follow one I'd initially asked, where can good documentation (shop manuals, technical descriptions, etc.) for tthe 1988 Bronco be purchased? I've searched out Helm and other companies like them for both bound and CD publications alike, but there seems to be a void or a black hole that has swallowed up everything from about 1980 to the early 1990's. Please advise.
By the way, I'm just learning how to use this forum and its options. The smiles on this post go with the follow up question above. This site is great and I've already learned a tremendous amount of priceless info. Keep it up!!!
