VIN does not contain any codes related to trans or rear axle. TRANS & AXLE codes stamped on the 2nd line of the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.

Standard equipment manual trans: 1963/83 F100, 1975/86 F150: Ford type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh.

9" rear axle standard equipment: 1957/82 F100, 1975/82 F150. Some 1983 F100's, some 1983/86 F150's have 9's, some have the Ford 8.8" integral rear axle that has an inspection cover.

I'm thinking it should be synchro'd, as my '70 was back when I bought it. Maybe it's worn out enough to not work as well as new?

My '64 3spd was NOT snychro'd.

It just grinds at about 5kmh or barley slower then slips in no problem ive had a couple people with same gen truck tell me its a "ford gear" for towing also it does not bogg out or die if thrown in second and take off firat gear is a real neck snapper at 20 +kmh revs round 2000 rpm at 20 k can i identify it or look for a serial number

Your tranny is a Ford 3.03 fully synchronized 3 speed as previously mentioned. This is basically the same tranny as the Mustang, Falcon, Maverick, and other Fords used. It does not have a Ford towing gear. Those people you talk to are FOS. You have a problem with your trans as the synchros might be going bad or you don't have much freeplay in your clutch. I used to have a 65 Falcon with a 3 speed that had an unsynchro'ed 3 speed that Ford didn't see fit to give it a 3.03 all synchro'ed 3 speed; instead giving them to Mustangs.

Stamped on the Warranty Plate:

TRANS code A = 1963/65 Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.

TRANS code C = 1966/86 Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.

If it grinds in 1st gear, the (1) brass syncro blocker ring (C4AZ-7107-D) is worn out.

RichS2659: 144/170/200 I-6's: 1963/67 Falcon/Comet, 1963/65 Fairlane, 1965/66 Mustang came with 'weak sister' Ford type 2.77 trans, has 'crash' 1st gear.
