I have a 49 F1 with a Mustang 11 rack, A 5.0 engine and a auto trans, can anyone point me in the right direction on what donor car or truck I could get a steering column out of that would work without to much fuss. Or what column are you using, I hope to be able to use a column shifter
I used an 85 crown vic column. cut 4" out of the column tube, added two inches to the steering double D stock, 6" taken off the shifter (_) double D stock, mounted it up with the vic's brake booster to column support. it mounts with the obvious 4 holes into the booster thru the firewall, and a large bolt hole lined up perfect with the bottom of the truck dash (its safe to drill here, it's like 4 thickness at the bottom for lots of cab strength & support) and I will triangulate it with some metal rod extending to the dash undersides. I will have to trim off 3" of the right corner of the mount because the cowl vent handle arm is in the way. for as much as you can ask for in cannibalized parts, it fits great, lots of room. ignition cyl, tilt, cruise buttons on wheel, column shift, delay wipers, turn signals. cleans things up a bit. got the pedals up to the firewall and the column goes thru the firewall, not the floor. pics are in my build thread on this site. granted I used the 85 Vic chassis, my steering shaft went right above the stock location, I dunno how the steering setup would be in relation to the MII. I did have to add about 3" to the rod that goes into the column shifter end but that was no biggie.
don't be duped into some $600 polished column! or $300....
What about the horn button wire? It goes down the middle of the steering shaft?
Mid Fifty sells a kit to convert the horn, should work for the F1 as well. I also saw here someplace where someone put in a wireless transmitter under their horn button with a receiver under the dash to the horn relay.
Could you use the stock column and take ohhhh say a camero/trans am from mid 70's and use there under steering wheel parts. I plan on exploring that idea but I bet somebody else has already.
I've taken both types apart, but I think it would take a lot of machining to make your idea work. They work electrically opposite. The kit Mid Fifty sells is about as simple as you can get.

Yeah but I though they $150. I may have the spare gm unit. Wouldn't it just need the groove cut for retention clip to hold it all down??? it been a long time since I was into it. With the horn parts and proper wheel mount.
