Well I did not get an answer in the HD Forum so I'll ask here

I need some options on mounting a replacement backup camera.
Will the license plate location get washed out when the plate lights are on?
My current one was mounted next to the hitch. It died maybe do to some
turd hitting the hitch in a parking lot and breaking my hitch mount stoplight?
Damm I hate people that hit a vehicle in a parking lot and walk off. I have
a stripe down the bed from someone and a bike or wheelchair $1200 for that.
Enough of that little rant.
Back to camera locations any input will be welcomed.
Where have you placed one and what are the up sides and what are the down sides
of the locations?

Thanks for the input.

I don't have one Sean, but I have yet to read anyone having "washout" issues with them mounted on the license plate frame.

The main thing I have read that a person should do is take some silicon and seal every crack or seam from manufacturing.

Where we live, that would be a good thing to do. I have read that folks have had theirs go cloudy because of moisture!

The dead one would every now and then come on, The image was a
bit some noise and when I took it out I dropped it a short distance and the
glass cover popped out and you could see what was left of the seal so
I think it is the reason it bit the dust.

Not sure if you have an 08-up tailgate, but have you though of putting one in the handle or emblem if you have a newer gate.

That's what I would like to do but I don't want to spend the money...guess Im cheap.

I have a 06 gate.I would update it but the cost
of a new gate is just too much.

The license plate ones will not get washed out from reverse lights. They usually have some IR LEDs on them.

I mounted a cheap Walmart back up camera underneath the tailgate in the space between the bumper and the tailgate. Worked great for connecting the camper. Camera malfunctioned so I removed it. Sorry no pictures.

It's not the backup lights but the plate lamps.

Either way they are not washed out. I have never had a problem with the picture except when the camera fills with condensation and then water.

Now that is the info I needed.
The question is there any better place to mount it?

Thanks
