So I checked the oil level today and I noticed its about a quart low. I don't have any leaks. Ive been using Valvoline maxx life high mileage. Engine has 98,000 miles. its never been low like that before. Is it normal?

How many miles since last oil change ? Lots of engines use a bit of oil , and if too long between changes , it will show . Ck your pcv also , that can cause oil consumption . If you are going 5k between oil changes 1 qt is not bad . If only 200 miles , that would be different .

One qt in 3500 miles is not "excessive" . But could be an issue . Ck your PCV and crank vent . Double check for leaks and do not use too thin an oil ( it will burn away faster ) . I would go ahead and change it also and start keeping a close eye on it to be safe .

My 04 calls for 5w30 . I use 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter , for the last 100k . I would see no issue going to 5w30 insted of 5w20 . Or even 10w30 if used hard or in a hot climate .
