np435 shifter issue

I have a problem with my np435 transmission, the problem is the shifter was removed while the trans was in gear I have read that you are supposed to remove the shifter when the trans is in neutral unfortuanatly it was not an option for me.Now I am wondering how hard it would be to reinstall the shifter, any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Do you ever get any responses. I am having the same issue. I removed the cover without thinking about what gear it was in. After inspecting the gears, flushing the housing and replacing the fluid now i am having troubles getting the cover back on and shifting properly. Anyone have any ideas???

This isn't too much of a problem. Just reach down into the shifter tower with a large screwdriver & flick the selectors into neutral, so that they are all in line, & central. There needs to be no load on the transmission to be able to do this - if you have trouble, have someone hold the clutch down for you.

In position like this, the three selectors will form a 'slot' that the shifter tip sits in.

The hardest part of the job is then pressing the retainer down against the spring pressure, to give it the necessary part-turn clockwise to lock it in position.

In this case, you just have to play & persevere......sometimes they will just fall in place, other times it can take some time - particularly if the trans is still in the truck, & you're working cramped, halfway under the dash.

Eyeball (or measure) the fork spacings in neutral, then slide the collars into the same positions & try installing the lid without moving the collars out of position.

Look down into the hole. You will see slots. Make both slots lineup in the centre. That is neutral. Put the shifter in.

It's the whole lid that he's trying to reinstall............the original poster was trying to refit just his shifter.

Ken,

You are right, I am trying to re-install the entire lid of the tranny. I appreciate the help. After numerous attempts and continuously loosing the plastic clips on the yoke I still haven't gotten it right. Maybe a couple cold ones while working on this will help.

Place the shifter and transmission in neutral. Drop the cover in.

Stuart, this is my first time working in the NP435 transmission. This may be a dumb question but how do i know if the shifter is in the neutral position as well as the transmission?

Remove the shifter from the tower. Look inside the hole. You will see two slots for the shifter to sit in.
Move the slots so they line up with one another. That is neutral. Use a screwdriver.

Look inside the transmission you will see corresponding rings the forks fit over. They are called synchros. Slide the synchros until they are equidistant between the corresponding gears. I will look around for some pictures to post.
