5R110 behind a 460? Is it doable??

Does anybody sell an adapter plate to put a 5R110 behind a 460? If not what are my options for automatic transmissions. I hear E4OD's suck and thats what I currently have. Would I be further ahead to just overhaul the E4OD with stronger parts?

I'm hoping to make at least 800ft-lb's torque with this thing some day. I want the transmission to be ready for it!

The E4OD was rated STOCK to be able to handle 1000ft/lb from what I have found out (kind of optimistic, but still...). The 5R110 is not a great mod, and that's why you never read of one of those in our trucks. Of course, everything can be done, but I advice against it. Do some research on some E4OD builds: for $3000 you can get a really bullet proof E4OD custom made for your exact needs. Right now if I were in your place I would run that stock trans while I build that engine up, then I would have the trans rebuilt and modified. As long as you don't become too crazy the stock trans will handle it. If it doesn't have one already, I advice adding an auxiliar ATF cooler.

Yeah adding a trans cooler, or a bigger/second one if it already has one is the plan for now. (From what I hear a deeper oil pan is a waste of money.) But a couple buddys of mine keep saying they hear all these horror stories of E4OD's going out. But I have found 1 online and everybody else says they are bulletproof. So I don't even know! The monster trans site says theirs are built for 800 ft-lbs which made me think the stock ratings were probably pretty low, but who knows. That monster kit sounds nice but for the money I would like to have something rated for 900-1000 to have a little overhead because I want to hit 800 and don't want to be right at the limit and have it go on me because I have a heavy right foot.

Gotta out pull them new diesels ya know!

From what I've heard, Brian's Truck Shop (BTS) does one of the best builds, and there is also a guy that goes by the nick The Punisher on several forums, you might want to check them out.

Alright, I've already sent BTS an email, I will see if I can find that other guy.

Thanks for your help!

Right now I think my best bet will be buying a core E4OD and installing a Monster kit in it and swapping it out later. (Around $1300 for the kit and trans.) And throwing in a big transmission cooler.

Yeah the E4's weren't that great from the factory. They did the job they were designed to do, but weren't as reliable as the could have been.

But, with one good rebuild and adequate cooling, it should last a good long while. Put a temperature gauge in to monitor oil temp in the pan.

High temps kill all transmissions - so good advice to all that said add a cooler...

I've head that part of the problem is the factory programming. It's designed for a soft, comfortable shift which equals slip... Slip equals wear and heat and heat equals death...
