1977 f100 300 6cyl 302 swap

This is a 1978 truck, the title is a typo

This is a short write up on how I changed and moved my motor mounts in my f100.. Swapping the old 300 out with a 302 is not the best way to go with an old 4x4 but the old 6cyl is tired and has low compression.. But because I have a perfect rear sump 302 and there us not a good write up I will be making it work and documenting it as I go!

Here is buckwheat

The original power plant that the previous owner ran for years with no breather!! Idiot

The removal

I went ahead and lifted the old goat

The 300 6 mounts are narrower and further forward than the correct
mounts.. just take the 6 bolts out and it pops right off

See the staggered bolts further toward the firewall? This is where the new 302 mounts go which are the same as the 351m mounts..

More to come!

351m 302 towers

300 6 towers

The v8 towers match the second and fourth holes on the 6cyl trucks frame..

Shoot, will-do! However, you will have to accept something for the mounts. Don't make me drive all the way down and buy you a drink!

Thanks, thanks again!

I had a '53 Chevy one time when I was young I thought I'd fix up. Very hard to find parts for unless you go through Brothers or some place like that, and they will set you back some $$ jack!!

That's true.. I'm on about 2 or 3 different forums with it and you would be amazed at how willing folks will help you for almost free if you're just nice to them

Here's the donor... I have personally finished 3 different projects with parts from this tired old monster..

We opted for the blue tipped wrench for this one

Heres the jewels

I6 left (on the left) beside v8 left (on the right)

I6 right (on the right) v8 right (on the left)

Got the v8, 302/351m on the right.. they bolt directly to the frame with NO MODIFICATION! All you have to do is dig the dirt out of the back hole

Here they are pretty as can be just before i tightened the right one down.. now she waits for a little American muscle..PS this will be getting a 351m before long

351m? Won't bolt to your bell.

351W will, or a decent running 302.

Hell, I'd put the six back in it (with some mods) before I'd put a 351M in in....Very little power benefit from a 351m over a 300.

4 bolts let you swap to the correct bell housing.... The 351m is what I was raised around and it is a SWEET motor.. this will never be a mud bogg truck so all I need is "give or take" 150 horses to tote my big sexy (goofy) smile down the road

Well if you are comfy with it, ok, but your OP says 302. Of course, a stock 302 is a pooch as well, but like many (some, one?) here, I'm always happy to suggest how someone else should spend their time and money.

JUST so you don't have to suffer too much, consider a cam change and maybe a small 4bbl. Should give you 50 horse easy....serving suggestion, ymmv

A 302 is going in and I do plan on putting a light thumper cam in it thanks for the advice.. the 351m is coming later.. but in my first sentence I admitted to this not being 4x4 friendly but have been curious about the swap and couldn't find a good write up (stirrup) on Google with pictures.. it is 302 351w 351m and possibly 460 friendly (not sure about the 460). Hell, even the poor soul looking to put in a snazzy 300 can reverse the thread and boom.. done.. But I believe ill enjoy my 302 dog or not since the truck wouldn't even run with the 6..

302 = many fairly easy performance upgrades, wide aftermarket support.

351M = few easy performance upgrades, little aftermarket support.

That's what I'm sayin'!

Anyway, good luck with it!
