Collapsed Lifter ???

97' 7.3 turbo diesel /Took the passenger side valve cover off, and one of the intake rocker arms is broken. Now the push rod falls to far into the head, very far in. Is this a collapsed lifter ?

Most likely not, the lifter was probably knocked out of the hole by the camshaft when the rocker arm broke. Going to need to try and get it back in the hole.

That makes it all perfectly clear, the rods falling right to the cam lobe.

Is the lifter sitting under the valve cover in there somewhere? If not, and you need one send me a PM, I have a bunch of them laying around and assuming I can find a good one, you can have it if you will pay the shipping. I may be able to find a pushrod for you too, but I think you're on your own for the lifter, lol.

i'm curious, is it possible to replace a lifter with just the valve cover removed. I thought the shop manual says you have to pull the engine and do the work from below with the oil pan removed. that is if i'm correct in translating their term 'valve tappet' to what everyone else calls a lifter...

it would make sense that you could just drop it in from above, though. getting an old one out from above may be tricky/impossible, though, I suppose...

Not possible without head removal.the lifter cant come out of the bore unless lifter retainer plate is broke...at wich point there is all kinds of bad $hisk messed up and the engine is coming out for sure cause its broke!

Make sure the end of the push rod didn't break off.

I also have a bunch of push rods.

Just if he looks down at the lifter and its out of the bore completly...that's real bad.I have seen when the lifter retainer brakes and the roller lifter turns.its ugly.

Its funny how these reps will for some yet not for others.fishy, butwe won't go down that road again.
