Were undertank spare tire carriers optional on 4x4s?

As far as I know. This truck is a 2wd but my '78 4WD had a spare carrier under the tank. It was the aforementioned ******* one that won't come off when you need it. The first time I needed the spare on that old '78 the nut clip broke when I tried to turn the eye-bolt.

10-4. Thanks. My rig is an amalgation of a 2WD 73 and 4WD 74 and has the eyebolt but nothing else and there were few clues as what might have been retrofitted to the 4WD frame.

My spare tire was mounted on a rusty bracket under the gas tank. I made a bracket
that bolts to the floor and the edge of the left front corner of the box. In fact, since I had
2 spares, I mounted both of them. With an 8' box and a Ford cap/topper, they are hardly
noticed standing tall and clean too.

I have no rear gas tank. I was actually contemplating a new hoist style spare tire holder. I cant imagine trying to lower a 35" mud terrain tire using the oem type carrier

Toss those monster tires. Mine are 235-75RX15 white stripe on stock rims and
stock wheel cover like the red one on the 75 F series brochure. I sold the fat tires
on the spoked rims. I tossed in the chrome pie-plate air cleaner too.
Stock tires on rims mount real nice in the front corners of the bed. No one can
see the brackets.

I have seen the newer truck style crank down cable spare tire installed under a 79, will that 35" fit between the frame rails back there?

As far as rust issues on the threaded shaft, anyone ever hear of grease or anti-seize?

My 78 Scab, 2wd longbed had one, I thought about keeping it but decided I would never have tires that would fit in it so I junked it.

The FTE classifieds or the spare tire carrier design....?

Its not a reproduced part and there is always a guy doing a factory spec restroation that needs one to carry his skinny white wall spare. lol
