G'day Brian,

Gotta fully concur mate. I too started with an Edge Tuner.
However after getting 'Custom Tunes' for the truck the difference is very pronounced, so much better.
I went with the FU2 Chip from PHP. It is custom designed for my truck taking into account, Intake, Exhaust, Wheel & Tyre size and the John Woods valve body in the tranny.

Bill's tunes break down likethis:

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) Gross Combined Mass (GCM) That is the Truck Weight (Mass) + Trailer Weight (Mass) = GCWR or GCM.
  • 25hp - Over 20,000lbs (9,071kg) GCWR (all terrain)
  • 40hp - 16,000 to 20,000lbs (7,260 to 9,071kg) GCWR (all terrain)
  • 65hp - 12,000 to 16,000lbs GCWR (5,450 to 7,260kg) (all terrain), 16,000 to 20,000lbs (7,260 to 9,071kg) GCWR (flat terrain)
  • 80hp - 8,000 to 12,000lbs(3,630 to 7,260kg) GCWR (all terrain), 12,000 to 16,000lbs (5,450 to 7,260kg)GCWR (flat terrain)
  • 100hp - 8,000 to 12,000lbs (3,630 to 7,260kg) GCWR (flat terrain)
  • 120hp - Not Recommended for powered rods
  • 140hp - Not Recommended for powered rods.
Keep in mind that files designated as "Tow" are designed specifically for the needs of towing (shift strategies, pressures, lockup, fuel curves, injection timing) while "Performance" programs are handled quite a bit differently.

As I predominately heavy tow on rough outback roads I went with.
The 25hp, 40hp, 65hp and the 80hp as tow tunes and Iuse them all depending on gross weight and the terrain.
When not towing I run it 90% of the time in an 80hp Daily Driver tune.
My 100hp is a performance tune and is a good fun tune at times when someone else needs a lesson.

There are some good chip designers out there just do your research and be comfortable with what you eventually go with.

Cheers,
Reg

Reg,
Many thanks, a most informative post.
I had a look on the PHP web site and the FU2 has been discontinued
so I will have to look at the new models.
Your post has made the choice of tunes much less confusing.
It looks like this upgrade to my truck should move a bit closer to the
top of the list.

My choice would be the TS chip
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/ts-6-position-chip

All the tuners supply toons for these.
