TFI Problems

I've been having big issues with my spark control on my truck, the truck barely runs with the SPOUT in, it misfires badly and wants to die. If I remove the SPOUT it runs better but is still pretty rough and has a rolling idle, but sometimes will even out and run ok with the SPOUT out.

I'm trying to replace my TFI to eliminate that, and my problem comes in there... I currently have a grey remote mount TFI, and I know that supposedly only 1994 and up had the black TFI, but motorcraft.com using VIN input and generic year model etc input tells me I need a black TFI as well as my local ford parts department.

And to clarify, my truck is a 1993 so that's why I'm so confused

I've been looking through my EVTM and it seems to believe the TFI has a start signal input which would make it grey correct? I'm really stumped on this one, never had Ford conflicting with Ford before...

Even Ford has conflicting information on which TFI module to use. To set the record straight you need a gray colored TFI module for your 1993 model year truck.

I am not 100% sure your issue is going to resolved with one, but if you do need one get a gray Motorcraft Part# DY1075

When did this problem start?

What have you replaced already?

Have you checked for codes?

Yea I don't think it'll completely solve my issue either, but the company I got my new PCM from is claiming the reason the computer has no control over the ignition timing is because the ignition module is bad.

The problem has been since I had to replace my PCM because of bad capacitors, I got a reman that I believe is not the right board internally, because it cannot advance or retard ignition timing at all, the truck will only run with the SPOUT out.

No codes in the new PCM, but I've only been able to drive it limited distances because the very poor performance limits my travel range.

Already replace, PCM, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ign. coil, injectors, fpr, map sensor, vacuum tested all vac lines, intake gaskets, tb gasket, pcv valve

aaaand I think that's it so far

But thanks for the info, I kinda figured I should stick with my grey module hence my confusion, I just wasn't sure if maybe there was a weird black crossover that was the same as the grey for like a year or two that I hadn't heard of before.

Given that the PCM has been replaced and may not be correct for that vintage truck it may be worth the effort to see if you can find a black and a grey module at a local scrapyard to experiment with.

Sounds to me like you got the wrong PCM. I would bring it back and get the right one rather then play guessing games.
