I'm far from expert but I'm fairly certain they were both D-60's, front & rear. In some parts of the country the front D-60's sell for $1200 so it's a good deal for you whether you keep the truck or not.

I believe there were less the 2000 of those made. It's not even listed in the Shop manual. I would guess 60 on the front. If it's a 70 on the rear it should have one of the following axle codes on the door plate; 27, 28, 36, D7 (limited slip)

I think we need your vin number to tell you whats up with that truck.
2 red flags are:
460's did not come in 4x4's in 79
4x4 SuperCabs & Crew Cabs in 79 were only available with short beds

That being said theres no telling what axles are under that truck
To answer your question though, a "real" 79 F350 4x4 would have come with front & rear Dana 60's

Super Cabs never had a short bed 4x4. Only crews.

Rear ends are cheaper than front axles. $1200 is outrageous for a rear axle.

$1k for a front Dana 60HP is totally do-able. Supercabs defiantly had long beds. There's no way it would have had a 460 from the factory. The F350s would have had a 351M or 400. A rear Dana 70 would be worth a little bit. A rear Dana 60 would be pretty worthless since they are so abundant.

When you start thinking about how many are rusted away or already parted out it is even rarer.

Thanks for the help. Just got some pics of it and definitely a keeper. I think the guy may have mistaken the 400 for a 460 unless someone installed a 460, doesnt much matter, probably will do another cummins swap, maybe. Will get some codes from him and see what it really is. The pic shows the D60 front but cant see the rear. It is a longbed. I did see there were not many super cab 4x4 F350's made. Guess I will make the 400 mile trip and pick it up.

1979 F350 4WD's came with Dana 60's front and rear. Some 1961/62 F350's, all 1963/78 F350's, 1979 F350 2WD's came with Dana 70's.

1979: First year F350's were available with factory installed 4WD / 460 (7 valve cover bolts per side) not available with 4WD or M/T until 1983.

Engine code 4th digit of VIN ~ 1977/79 F150/250 4WD, 1979 F350 4WD: B = 300 I-6 / H = 351M / S = 400.

351M/400's have 8 valve cover bolts per side.

Could you get an F-350 with a 300 I6? I know it was offered on the 4x4 150s and 250s, but I was under the impression that the 350s only offered the 400 and 351M in 4x4 versions.
