HI all, just curious what everyone sees out of their IDIT trucks for MPGs. Mine is a 1992 F-350 Crewcab with DRW and is 2wd. It has an early '94 engine with ATS turbo. It had a full rebuild, new injectors, IP, new SMF conversion and ZF5 rebuild about 10,000 miles ago. The truck has just over 250,000 miles on it and the motor had about 110,000 before rebuild. The truck has been taken care of very well and has no rust anywhere.

I am 17 but I do not hot rod any of my trucks. All of my fluids get changed on the dot and when things break I fix them right. Some people think this is over the top but I also hand wash it every weekend. It's just how I was raised.

Anyhow I just filled up today and with about 1/2 of the time towing saw 23mpgs. No BS.

 

your getting 10 mpg higher than i am when towing,your math is bad,the way your fueling up and calculating is incorrect,your Canadian and talking imperial gallons,someones playing a nice trick on you at night by bringing you fuel rather than stealing it lol or your odo is off.

yeah, I'm throwing up a BS flag too! That is 7 or 8 MPG's better than both of my SRW trucks. I think you need to check your math Copernicus! I hope we are all wrong, and you have unleashed an undiscovered trick to 30% better fuel mileage than anyone else is getting, but I don't think so!

 

Might try converting that to US gallons, how big of a trailer are you towing? IMHO if its a small enough trailer and you drive like an old man I could see 17-19mpg (US). Now if that 23mpg was all empty Id believe it but... btw nice looking truck you got there

For the record the only time Ive recorded mpg is when hooked to my 24' enclosed trailer (giant 8k lb box) and that was anywhere from 7-12mpg.

 

IDK, my truck is getting around 50mpg on Fossil Fuels...

I see about 17 average around town and 12-13 towing my full size Bronco.

 

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong but on fill up last week , I filled up the front tank only. Then over the course of this week I drove 211 miles. Haven't verified odometer accuracy but speedo was verified by my dad and his I-phone yesterday. Then, after returning to my hometown I again refilled only the front tank. It took 8.64 gallons. I'm in SW Missouri so a long way from being Canadian, lol. Now by my math 211/8.64=24.43. My math and method is correct, right?

And, sorry for not clarifying the trailer is a super light 16ft. utility flatbed. My bad on that one probably not a good comparison since the truck doesn't even know it's back there when it's empty.

 

Did you reset the trip odometer, or by chance mis read it? Your method is OK, doing mileage driven by number of gallons used.

I'm in this forum researching a IDI swap into my 75' crewcab dually. If you're getting that kind of mileage I'm buying a engine tomorrow.....

 

Dont knock the guys truck to bad or call BS I know first hand it is entirely possible.

When my kids where little my dad had an 85 f250 4x4 that if you drove it between 50 and 55 mph and drove it softly it would consistantly achieve 28-30 MPG!!! It was no major power house by any means but was the slow and steady truck no turbo, ran smooth as a watch, started easily even at 20 below.

Only way to know for sure is continued checking of milage. I recomend full tank checks on milage, less likely to make mistakes during calculating and such.

 

Im going to say unlikely but possible. When i first dropped mine into my 79 It was getting 18.8mpg and i drove it like i stole it everywhere i went. Wasnt a shift where i didnt hit the governor lol. The 18.8 was mixed driving o'course. Worst i could make it do aw 13ish pulling 12k around town for a couple days.

 

Yes, I use the trip odometer and reset every fill-up. I also check the trip reading against the regular odometer as I have seen them mess up before.(although rare)

A 75' crewcab dually, now that sounds cool. Would like to see some pictures. I have a 77' F-350 flatbed with 351m and 4sp. and a 78' F-350 Cab and chassis. The 78's engine is locked up will be getting an 6.9 or 7.3 soon(hopefully). After that it will get a car hauler ramp bed.

 

My 86' got as high as 18-19 MPG if speed was kept at 55 MPH. Our flatbed has 18" sheet metal walls but is also fairly light. That was a three tank average though.

I'd caution against believing it until a few consecutive tank fillups are recorded and calculated. The filler nozzle may have simply shut off slightly too soon. I saw slightly over 30 MPG once. Then I went around the block came back and it took another 10L. That brought the average down the high teens.

Cruising speed and terrain (hills) are a factor too.

Lots of flat land at 50-50 and I might believe it, but you'd have to post more results to get a more accurate average.

Yes, I had planned on calculating on the next few fill ups to get a more accurate reading but couldn't resist getting everyone wound up.I think it's funny to listen to all of the nay-sayers. I will be returning as I fill up to post the results.

As for gears, that's a good question. I haven't checked and to be truthful, I don't know how to check. I do know that I run 55@ about 2,050rpms.
