Question about my intake

I am installing a 6637 in my young 2002 7.3l. It is almost all stock under the hood, just trying to start getting more out of it.
I have heard some negatives to an oiled air filter with this engine, how do y'all feel about them with this engine or should it even be a big deal?

Oiled air filters of good quality will function fine on our engines. The big issue is the seal of the filter. Drop-in filters with a stock box are discouraged for that reason. I had an oiled AFE Stage II 7 layer filter on my truck and switched to the Dry "S" version because the oil from the filter was wicking into my prefilter sock and causing dust to stick to it.

I've heard there's a K&N variety that does not work so well, but a filter that can be oiled/re-oiled is a good option. Having said that, if my truck had not come with the S&B reusable filter, I would have gone with the 6637. As it is, the S&B intake system works well enough, and is easy to service. I can still hear the right amount of turbo sound for my taste.

When you say the problem is the seal, what are you referring to? The connection to the stock boot?
Also, I was thinking the stock box was coming out leaving it an open filter. Honestly I'm new to messing around under the good just tryin to learn

Jared, the seal he's referring to is the lip around the filters that are similar to the stock design (hence the term "drop in"). With the 6637, you are pulling the stock box and simply clamping the tube that leaves that box to the 6637 filter (preferably with a piece of 4" exhaust pipe) it will make sense when you get it apart.

Don't expect much of a performance gain from the 6637 alone, what you will notice is a significant increase in noise level. The 6637 is a good intake if you can deal with the noise. For my money, I'd go with the Motorcraft AIS system, but since I don't have any I've gone back to the stock box to decrease the noise. I didn't notice any decrease in performance going back to stock from the 6637 and the long distance rides are much less taxing.
