Thumbs up Front spring goes urk-urk, leaf insulator worn

Hi Guys

Searching this forum seems a right bear, search anything with spring in the parameter and you get a pile of threads about lowering/highering your truck, so I have given up and am going to ask out straight.

For a while I have had a little urk-urk noise on the right side front of my Excursion when coming to a stop or pulling away and believe I have found the cause, a worn leaf insulator (well that's what I am calling it untill I find out any different).

The following few pictures show the part I am after, there are actually 10 or 12 of these fitted to the front/rear springs, it's a about 2 inches round, has a locating peg that fitis into a hole in the leaf and is about an 1/8 inch thick, anyone have a source or part number as I seem to be drawing a blank at the moment?

The remains of the insulator

Regards

Do you have any local spring shops that are commercial orientated? You could buy a sheet of PTFE and cut out your own biscuit.

Your urk-urk description cracks me up lol

Drive a wedge in there and shoot some grease in it.

They are called leaf spring tip inserts.

Available all over Ebay and the net. Just get the right size

Here is a store:

BTW, If you ever feel the need to replace the rectangular interleaf spacers that go in the center of the pack, forget about buying them. You can make them out of Delrin (Acetal) sheet. Just cut it with a knife or band saw to the right size and drill a hole in it. Do not use Teflon or HDPE plastic. it is not strong enough on compression.

You can buy Acetal sheets here:

Acetal Delrin Sheet (black)

Many thanks for the info, I bought a half dozen off Ebay, had them shipped to a friend of mine in PA and will pick them up next week.

Hi Guys

Fitted my new spring tip inserts today

First I lifted the old tub by jacking on the frame to take some load off the springs, then drifted a chisel in between the leaves and removed the remains of the old insert.

Then slid the new insert in, removed the chisel and with a little tap with a hammer the insert peg slipped home, I had to trim a little off the length of the locating peg as I couldn't open the spring leaves enough.

Just incase anyone else finds this thread the ones I bought are 2 7/16" diameter with a 9/16" peg

Regards

Hi Housedad

The jury is still out, on the drive home from the shop (only about 3 miles) no urk-urk, we will see.

After a little testing it appears the urk-urk is still present, looks like a little more investigating is required, at least I now know what it isn't.
