Several hours to change a serpentine belt at the dealer? That's going to be around $325.00 just labor? damn, 20 minutes on the ol" 7.3 Powerstroke and your beer's still cold.
I changed it on my 6.0L. Most of the process wasn't a big deal, The trick was getting the right twist in the belt so that as you slid it around the pulley's it twisted the right number so that it was flat when you applied the tensioner. And those twist in such a place that you could not reach them with your hands. It was a real nasty process for my large hands.
Mitchell is a company that repair centers use to determine how much time is allowed to do a job. Also they have the procedures for repair. There are other companies out there that do similar things, but Mitchell is by far the largest. They also give a degree of skill to do a job. This one is rated a "D," which is fairly easy. If a shop was on $80/hr flat rate and it took .6 hr to do the job, according to Mitchell, then the labor would be $48. Most good mechanics can beat flat rate and thus, make more $$.
