1996 F250 fuel filter install

I have dual tank F250 ext cab short bed with the 460 engine. Is there an easy way to change the fuel filter. I was under the truck this morning and in order to get the filer out of the bracket it looks like I'm gonna have to drop the forward fuel tank.

You need a special tool to get the hose fittings off. You do not have to pull the tank, tho.

Amazon Amazon

Be prepared to swear a lot. Even with the tool, sometimes those fittings are a booger to get off.

You need a release tool for the line clips that slides in around the fuel line and into the filter to release the internal clips. Available at any parts store, unless you have the plastic "horseshoe clips" which just pull out. If you have those you should be able to see them on the ends of the lines. New ones usually come in the box with the new filter so you can see what they look like. If you have those you can just pry them out with a small screwdriver. Be prepared to plug or cap the fuel line so fuel doesn't drain all over everything. Also, a bucket under the area is helpful. Once you have the lines lose unbolt the bracket holding the filter to the frame, ( two nuts on the outside of the frame rail) now you can put the bracket in a vise and pop the filter out and pop the new one in. Much easier than trying to fight it in and out with the bracket on the frame. Bolt the new filter and bracket back on the frame, snap the lines back in and you are good to go.

He should have the internal clips on a 1996 model. The last year with the horseshoe clips you describe is 1991. They are MUCH easier to deal with, reason #64 why the 87-91 trucks are the best. :-)

Thanks for the info on the horseshoe clips. Can't wait to see my parts store guy again who says my 94 truck is weird because it has the internal clips. Now I have the info. I need!
