power steering pump

Couple weeks ago I bought a donor truck with power steering and power disc brakes. The PO had switched it over to a straight six so the power steering bracket is wrong for my 352. I went to the yard yesterday to pull a bracket and while there I noticed a few different pumps. And I'm wondering if I have the wrong pump. Mostly because I can't see how I'm going to mount it to bracket I pulled.

So I'm going back to pick up a pump and I'm wondering which pump would be better. The two styles were basically the same except the fill tube on one was long and skinny and the other was shorter and wider.

They both fit the bracket. They both spin without much hesitation (are they suppose to spin freely or with a bit of a slush slush slush? )

Thanks

There are Bendix pumps and your donor should have had one that runs the Saginaw gear. My understanding they are different.

Grab a bracket from a 73-76 FE 360, the pump mounts under the bracket so when you look in you see the bolts in the slots.

Both of the pumps lined up to the holes. Other then saying that the fill / dipstick holes are different, I didn't see any other differences. The one on the donor truck is from a much more modern truck. It's plastic, somewhat pyramid shaped, just like you'd see on almost any modern car. If I could figure out how to mount it, I'm sure it would work great.

Buying a donor truck with a different engine than yours is a bad idea, since the pump bracket doesn't work.

Most call for the round metal pump with 3/4" filler, but I have seen the newer plastic pumps being run, how well I don't know.

Are the connector hoses different? You can use a small radiator looking cooler on the return side rather than running the long line.

If the P/S pump has a plastic reservoir, it's from a 1978 and later F100/350/Bronco and Passenger Car (except '78/79's w/hydro-boost-uses the "canned ham" Saginaw P/S pump as do 1975/91 Econolines).

Plastic reservoir: The P/S pressure hose has a straight tube w/an o-ring on it...connects to the pump w/a qwik connect fitting.

P/S pump w/steel reservoir used thru 1977, P/S pressure hose threads onto pump.

Since FE engines were cancelled at the end of the 1976 model run, and the plastic reservoir pump is a different shape than the steel reservoir pump, no FE P/S pump mounting brackets will fit it.

1989 Aerostar all 2WD/AWD V6 from 5/26/1989, 1990/97 Aerostar all 2WD/AWD V6.

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
