Calling the 4r70 Gurus... Please tune in...

I have a 2000 Lariat xt cab 5.4 2wd. 4r70? I have a possessed trans. First off, the star gear press weld let loose and lost reverse, 2nd, 4th, and generally sounded and drove like .....(undrivable censored edit).... I had since had the trans rebuilt with new star gear, heavy duty disks and steel combo, etc. Ran great for about 3 months after the rebuild then lost OD. It would go through gears and when it should go to OD, it seemed to go to neutral. The mechanic went back in and said a gasket blew out and shredded. More $ for fluid and parts... Again, ran great for about 3 months. Now I have lost 3rd completely. The mech said that the bolts may have backed out on the valve plate. So I dropped the pan last night and made sure all bolts were torqued to 12 in Lbs., filled it up and still no 3rd. This knot in my stomach is tightening as I type . I truly believe that I have a gremlin that will take a flock of priests to excise. I don't really want to eat the $1800 loss on this trans and move on to a different one. But I need my truck to get to work, somebody has to make the donuts. lol. Is there a quick guide to cross-referencing tran swaps? Are some years better than other? Can I swap my 4r70 with a 4r100 out of a 2000 5.4 lightning and still use the same computer? Or maybe a 1998 E-250? What say the almighty Tranny Gurus?

Thanks for your help, my 150 would not have stayed on the road this long without all the advice and tips from this site.

It's not going to be of any help but you got a poor shop to do the work.
Any trans out of like year should work.
Just for illustration, I was pulling gross combined loads over 12,000 lbs and ballooned my converter with a 4.6L motor yet..
There was no use having it rebuilt stock and have the same thing happen again.
Went custom high performance rebuild from a very well known shop along with custom converter and never had a problem again. It's bullet proof and now has 190,000 miles.
Good luck.

Thanks Bluegrass,
I did find a 1999 E-250 that had a busted 5.4 and good 4r70 that was a rebuild about 60k (1yr?) ago for $200. I figure I can dig into this broken one and see what let loose, or in time find the right shop to hop it up.
Sorry for the repeat of the 4r70 thread, but I could not find a solid answer to what trans would work in my truck. I assume that the 99 e-250 will be a good match in theory. I still have not found a good 4r70 identification chart that would show if it were designed to be mated with the 5.4. I did find listing for year and what vehicle it came out of.

I still would like to know what I would need to install a 4r100? I am considering a super charger for later down the road.

One more thing, how do I confirm a trans is a 4r70W (wide) vs. 4r70 with narrower gearing?
Thanks
