Same problem... I think

2009 6.4L 164k miles

Hey guys, I learned today that I have the same code. Been seeing the wrench for awhile .... bought the truck used.. from a Ford Dealer.. with a 154k miles. Buying from a Ford dealer, I figured they would have run it through the ringer as far as service and fixing known issues. Had it about a month when I learned that I had to replace the radiator... been problem after problem... the latest is the wrench. Took it to my local dealer last week, they said the only thing they could find was bad exhaust temp sensors, both of them....

Two days later, the wrench is back. Today, I took it to a different dealer, while the wrench was lit, left it running until they could hook up and tell me what the code was. ECT was about 188 and EOT was about 230. The mechanic said that code usually means oil cooler replacement in his experience. Remove cab, etc. etc. He said there could be trash in it...

Any way clean it before having to replace to see if it works? And how much did it cost to have it replaced??

Thanks for all the info
J

do a coolant flush is about all you can do. I got one when my coolant needed replaced for about 160 bucks or so.

Check the thermostats maybe they need attention. Much cheaper to have a look at them.

Thanks, I had them do a complete coolant flush when they put the new radiator on a few months ago, I think. I'll have them check the Tstat's first.

Thanks

My problem ended up being one bad T stat ( replaced both) After certified flush with VC 8 and 9, etc., the code came back. Replaced the oil cooler. Now temp deltas are fine. Cost of t stats; flush and oil cooler was slightly south of $3,000 at Ford dealer.

BTW, before repair, my ECT was in the 195 range and EOT was 230 under no loads and 78 degree temp.

I had to replace my oil cooler a while back due to having Ford Gold and Green Universal antifreeze mixed, contaminating the coolant causing gelling in the oil cooler.

One thing to think about if you have to replace the oil cooler is there is a lot of stuff that comes off that you can have replaced for periodic maintenance at the same time and Ford will only charge you for the parts since they are removing them anyway. I had both my belts replaced, both thermostats, fuel cooler, etc. At least I didn't incure any more labor costs...in then end it's the labor costs that adds up.

Welcome to FTE, 240 EOT is the limit I would run the truck before pulling over and letting it cool, you are probably not getting any codes because you have a tuner. I’m not over familiar with the Mini Max tuners but that is based on how other tuners I have seen. Are you seeing these temps under load or are these being seen daily driving? My EOT and ECT run within 2 degrees of each other all the time unless I am towing then I can see about a EOT 10-15 degree difference higher then ECT with a sustained 1250-1300 EGT under a heavy load, which IMO is not bad considering the pistons are oil cooled.

What do I need to buy to monitor the ECT and EOT? I do not know exactly what it running, and I just read (above) that 240 is the max. I do not pull any heavy loads, but I do go on 3 hour highway rides frequently.

Thanks guys!

How did you fix the air lock??
Also a question for all...
By "oil cooler" do you guys mean the cooler in front of the radiator or the thing sitting on top of the motor???
