Your question is somewhat confusing...HP (high pinion) and HD (heavy duty) are two different things, and the years don't intersect, what exactly are you trying to do?
The "heavy duty" nomenclature refers to '73 - '77.5 F250 low pinion axles.
"High pinion", is in reference to all '73 - '79 axles, other than the above.
I honestly don't know the answer to your question as i don't mess around with the half ton trucks too much, but i would assume they interchange , if i'm mistaken let me apologize in advance.
I don't know about swapping parts, but if you have both axles, why not just swap the whole assembly? the axles from an F250 4x4 will bolt right into an f150 supercab 4x4.
I dont have both axles i was scanning craigslist and found the outers off a d44 8 lug. Its cheap enough ill prolly just buy it and find out.
I figured it might save me some gas money to get parts if someone has tryd this already haha
Because they are both leaf, this might not be entirely true, but when I swapped 8 lugs onto my 77 F150 D44, I had to keep the 150 knuckles to make the steering geometry work. In other words, I used the spindles, hubs and brakes off the 250.
I know that the 76-77 outer axle shafts were longer than the 77.5-79 dana 44 so if you change from the knuckles out to the older style you'd have to change the outer shaft I believe you can change to chevy outers to achieve the 8 lug but I'm guessing you'd have to change the outer shaft as well with that hope it works out
78 f150 4x4 Supercab has the same steering as the f250 4x4, everything from firewall forward is the same. I just got done swapping f350 axles/springs onto mine so I know.
I think you should be able to just swap the hubs (with rotors) and be done. You *might* need the calipers.
Close. I wasn't as clear as I should have been. Steering aside, 150 to "small hub" 250 you need the spindles, hubs and rotors, brake brackets, and calipers. The stub shafts are barely shorter on the 150 but not enough to matter.
You should be able to bolt the larger spindles to your current knuckles. It will work. The only thing that may be different is the spline count on the outer shafts. I know my 44HP had a fairly high spline count...not as many as a D60 though. While it has been many years since I tore down a 5 lug version of the D44, I somewhat recollect it maybe had fewer splines.
