How Many Miles Should I be Cautious on Buying a used Truck?

The engine design life is around 250K miles. At that point expect to do a lot of work on the fuel management system, valve train, ancillary systems. The basic engine is very robust, you rarely hear of block failure, crank/rods/pistons giving trouble. It's mostly injectors, HPOP's, valve train issues, which are more on the outside of the engine and can be maintained/repaired more easily. This puts aside the whole issue with the oil cooler/EGR cooler since that's well known and can happen randomly - some never have a problem, some have it early. Head gaskets are not an issue themselves but they do like to fail after something else happens. The VGT turbo is, as far as I'm concerned, a neat trick waiting to fail but easy enough to fix. Sensors and computers run the engine, and a sensor can fail at any time, from five minutes after it's installed to never, so that is a total crapshoot.
Personally I probably wouldn't buy a truck with over 100K miles on it and expect to not be spending maintenance money on it regularly. Budget $2K a year for that and you will probably not be putting change back in your pocket.
Edit - doesn't mean that trucks with over 100K, 200K miles aren't good trucks, just that they will need maintenance in keeping with their mileage. You can mostly be pretty sure of getting to 80K - 100K with oil changes and filter changes but not major surgery, unless the oil cooler bites you. After that the odds of needing an injector or something like that tend to go up.

I think there is a lot of life in trucks over. 100k and 200k. Just realize all of them need maintance and repairs. It's still cheaper than a $40k truck payment.
If you start looking for a truck take a scanguage with you and check it out or someone who knows the. 6.0 trucks and they can help make sure you get a good one.
My dealer 2 weeks ago had a 05 with 100k miles for $10k! It sold before I could get there. There are some great deals on these trucks out there. Good luck
