I just purchased a 97 F350 Dually with the 7.3 Turbo Diesel. This truck will be used primary as a tow vehicle for a RV. It has a verified 98,000 miles on it. Since the wife and me are planing on some extended camping trips,I want to be sure all the maintenance is up to date. I had the trans serviced yesterday with a fluid change and filter. The supplemental owners manual says to change the coolant at 50,000 miles. Since I have no way to know if this has been done, I decided to do this myself. Manual says it holds 22 qts of coolant. I took drain plug out and let it drain for about two hours. Manual also says to install 4 pts of coolant additive FW-15 which I did. When I started back I put one gallon of 100% antifreeze and one gallon of water,I then put another gallon of antifreeze and tried to add a gallon of water, but it will not hold anymore. This is about 12 qts on coolant and water. What gives? Does it have a bleeder screw somewhere? It only held about 1/2 of what manual stated.
Pete has you on the right track. The link he posted is an excellent write up and is the one I followed when I flushed my system (and will use again).
While you're at it, have you thought about a coolant filter bypass install ? It's not a difficult install, is not expensive and will filter the junk (mostly casting sand) out of your coolant giving your water pump a longer life.
I didn't have the coolant handy when I replaced my radiator, but my new radiator holds 7 gallons. Which is about 29 quarts. Which I filled with water as a temporary fix. I'm still filtering out the crap from my old radiator, see my pictures.. so I definitely need to keep flushing my system before I add expensive coolant that gunk.

Alex posted a nice setup. I couldn't afford it at the time so I went with the following. Remind yourself to check the SCA. You can add with a filter change.
Sift through the few i took. It was a messy process! Enjoy
Thank you. Nice radiator. I saw your gallery and was impressed how bad was the coolant system; that truck has suffered a lot and without TLC. Its clearly a work truck; its a good project. Good luck.
Yes It Is. Now I Checked The Other Day, That ***** IS Still There.. Guess Its Time To Do A Professional Flush.. I Don't Have Access To A HOSe To Do It Myself.. The One Problem Is Finding A Place That Will Flush A Diesel. Firestone Is A No Go..
