Spark Plug Fun

so decided to tackle the spark plugs in my truck this weekend. I just hit 90,000 miles and noticed a hesitation at WOT so figured it was the plugs. I got some Champion double platinum from NAPA and Friday night cracked each plug a quarter turn and sprayed carb cleaner on each plug.

well here's how the first 3 started :/

I figured it would happen but was hoping to get lucky but of course not

After getting all 8 out and the new ones in I had a miss at idol so figured maybe a coil pack or injector but tested them out and no dice so----

started pulling plugs and look what I found, somethings not right here lol, was cylinder #3 and of course I started on driver side so the 7th plug I checked was the bad one but hey saved a lot of money doing it my self wasn't terrible just took a whole day.

now it runs like a new truck

Lucky Plug Plucker

Damn, I guess I got lucky with mine. Ihave an 04 with 102.5K, bought the Lisle tool, did the cold plug method with the 1/8-1/4 turn, sprayed carb cleaner and let it set for about 1/2 hour. Got all 8 out but it did take time. The second plug back on the drivers side was broken but not seperated. The center would spin in the threads. It was constant out and in woth the ratchet and the back 2 on the pass side was a P.I.T.A! Now after driving for 3 days, I have a hesitation around 1,500- 1,800 rpm going up hills or under a load. I retighteded the coil packs and cleaned the MAF sensor. Gonna try it again tomorrow.

I too did mine as well this weekend. I had more luck than you, but I really took my time with them.
The passenger sides came out really nicely. I got cocky and started planning the rest of the afternoon in my head thinking the driver side would just as easy.

I forgot to knock on wood and the first 2 on the driver side broke. I cracked the back 2 a little more and put some more gogo juice in there to let them soak some more and contemplate their situation, while I extracted the 2 I just broke.

Luckily I had no issue extracting and the 2 in the back behaved commendably and I thanked them for it. Unfortunately the plans for the afternoon did not come to fruition.

Dakotarider, I place money on an issue with the coilpacks based on my experience. 1200-1800 rpm with a slight load (going up hill) seems to be THE indicator. Could be a bad coil, or could be a related connection. When I had a cracked plug (on installation) the misfire was much more prevalent.

Thanks Tooldad. I drove it today with no problems BUT, need to find a hill tomorrow to verify it is either fixed or still there. Planning on dragging the camper 1300 miles real soon. Can't afford for it to crap out on me on the interstate someplace!
