Any advantage to 4.9l intake tube?
I have the 5.8 in my truck and I read somewhere that the lower intake tube off of the 4.9 flows cooler and more air than mine. I imagine it is because it pulls from behind the grill rather than from the small gap between the hood and grill.
Anyone know about this? I saw a ton of 4.9 intake tubes at the junkyard this weekend, so thought I'd ask.

agreed, been running that tube on mine for a year now and it runs a bit better since the original tube was between the hood/grill area which is rather restrictive, verses behind the driver sid head lamp which was a larger area, and more open, granted air may not be much coolar its ambiant air tempfor crying out loud...but its a bigger improvement as far as being able to breath....

how does all of 5 minutes sound, thats most of the time being spent removing the slips/screwes and detaching the hose from the air box, and walking it to where ever, then putting the new one in its place and hooking it up...mine was maybe at most 3 minutes...
if its the same style as the one in the picture yes should fit just fine, parts from 1987 to 1995 ('96/'97HD) will/should be compatible for our trucks
It is, just pull the old, put in new, all of 3 to 5 minutes if every thing goes as planned...honestly hardest part was locating one to use...
So our trucks could go swimming in shallow water...why else would it be called a snorkel... LOL

I swapped mine out on my 1992 F150 w/5.8 a year or so ago. As stated above, it's an incredibly simple swap. It all snaps together just like factory. The thing that took the longest for me was cleaning and detailing the 6-cyl duct I bought at the salvage; I like a tidy engine compartment.
Just looking at the two systems side by side, it's clearly obvious why the 6-cyl duct is better; shorter, straighter, and not obstructed by the hood. One thing I noticed, is that you can hear the air inlet "moan" must more prominately with the 6-cyl duct installed. Which may be why the factory used a duct on the V8's that was partially obstructed by the hood; to help reduce the inlet noise. I think there might be some federal noise threshold relative to drive-by air inlet noise. Just a theory.
Cheers,
JD

well as for "noise" when I had the snorkel verses the current inlet I have (straight 6) I don't detect any noise other then whats there already, and I don't detect any further noise after the swap...so who knows...I like the straight 6 inlet better as it seems to do better, and also seems to be pulling less dust and debris into my air filter...so another bonus!! YAY!
