302 rebuild: Questions for the Experienced
First of all thanks for letting me take some of your time.
I like to do this kind of stuff for fun and whenever i get in over my head this forum always saves my behind. I wanna start a new project and rebuild a fuel injected 302 over the past couple months, but I have zero experience with this and need some help knowing where to start. Bear with me, I will be open minded and hear what you have to say considering I know I have not done this before.
I have a 93 f150 E4OD with a fuel injected 302 engine, almost everything is pretty much stock or OEM replacement. I do not have any time constraints and am planning on grabbing another 302 off craigslist. I'd like to build a strong motor for a daily driver without going over power range of requiring a MAF conversion. Things I'd like to tackle in the future are slight cam and valvetrain upgrade but before I get ahead of myself I need help getting started. (I know I'll need Conanski to save me from my own ignorance at that point hah)
I'm thinking of grabbing a 1996 302/E4OD combo with 73,000 miles for $350 and basically comes down to $150 just for the engine. Motor ran when it was pulled. Is this too much of an initial investment for a motor I'm just gunna tear apart? And also, just weighing options, with a low miles motor like this, would those of you who are experienced overbore it or just set it up with new piston rings, bearings etc. If your gunna tell me I need to open her up before I know the next steps what signs would tell me it needs to be overbored
Thanks in advance,
Also because I know not everyone on here wants to write a book on this forum to help every soul in need, has anyone used this book and are willing to recommend that I purchase it or a different one?

In '96 all 1/2 tons were OBD-2 MAF which is a much more complicated version than the OBD-1 MAF found on some '94 and '95 trucks, so transferring this into your truck won't be a simple procedure. The motor would still make a good platform for a buildup for your truck, inside it's very similar to what you have now with a bigger roller cam so if it's got low miles you should consider just running it as it is because rebuilding it to stock spec won't add any performance.

You had a good point about just leaving it as is. I am however going to at the least clean it up first. Do you think gt40 heads would be a good idea as long as it's off? I could easily pick some up off an explorer.
And at least for future reference; are there no cam and valvetrain upgrades available without requiring MAF?

Yes many here have done that on an SD truck.
The only upgrade I'd suggest is installing 1.7 rockers, this vintage motor is already equipped with a pretty good cam.
