4.9l Exhaust leak

My 1992 F-150 has sprang an exhaust leak, on the rear Manifold, where the manifold and pipe flanges meet/are bolted together.

I tried simply tightening the bolts (The simplest/cheapest point to start) and no bueno. It's not BAD right now, but has an irritating clicking/clacking noise when the engine is running.

So exactly what are my options, because at this point, my idea is to burn out the old bolts, and add new ones/new exhaust flange mating gasket if applicable.

Ideas?

Thanks for the input, in advance.

Not sure if this will help you, but take a look at this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post12568281

I'm sorry to be dense, Yaga..

But I read all through that buld thread and didn't see anything related to my issue?

My leak isn't between the Manifold-Head...

It's between the exhaust pipe/flange and the Manifold Flange. 2 bolts per connection, and they're pretty rusted.

There is no gasket where the pipe meets the manifold.

Napa has the replacement studs on their hanging parts tree.

If you can get the nuts off the studs have flats built into them where they meet the manifold so they might come out without torching.

Are you sure the leak is between the manifold and pipe? 4.9's seem to have a tendency to crack the manifold at #6 cylinder.

I can see the black soot/residue as the point where the 2 parts come together.

The sealer I posted can be used on ANY exhaust connection, not just where the manifolds bolt up. In fact, when i just hooked my exhaust back up, I smeared a little on both flanges to make sure I would have a good seal.

So, I recommend changing your studs like you mentioned, and then applying a little of the sealer before you torque the nuts down. I will say that I also do my best to make sure the distance between the two studs and the retainer is equidistant to help with a better seal and a more even application of sealing pressure.
