Slowwww crank on start.

My 2002 excursion cranks very slow on start up. Batteries and alternator check good. Starter going bad?

It could be a bad starter, but it could also be a failing GPCM. You will also want to Ohm your glow plugs to make sure they're all within spec too.

Does it crank up easier if you turn it off after running but quickly crank it back up? If so, it is possible your LPOP needs to be replaced. Make sure to buy a Melling LPOP if you do (about $80).

You're in Flower Mound? One of "The FTE Brotherhood" is from up there...just can't remember who it is off the top of my head.

Starter ever been replaced before? My old one lasted 9 nine years. Pull it out and get it tested at the local parts store, have them test a new one. Bet you will see a difference.

Check to make sure that your connection at the batteries are clean and tight.

Might also want to have your batteries load tested.

If your batteries are good and all connections are good and tight then odds are its the starter. Have your starter tested and if it fails replace it with a quality unit.

I agree what has already been stated above. Also check your battery cables not just at the ends but the cable themselves. Peel back some of the rubber insulation from the cable at the terminals. If it is not shiny copper looking then corrosion is developing and the cables need to be replaced. Also pull the cable end from the starter and peel this back as well. The last truck I worked on had corrosion for about 8" down the cable, had corrosion a couple of inches on the driver side battery terminal. Also check each ground cable too as they get corrosion there too. The positive battery cable is about $112.00 which is Ford factory specs, the negative cables are $67.00 each. I changed out my positive battery cable yesterday while performing some needed maintenance. Takes about an hour.

I agree you should load test your batteries, check both ends of all cables...but..I see no purpose in taking the starter to be "tested" at a parts store, you test it every time you go to start your truck, you said its turning slow so as long as all other connections and batts are good, the starter is toast. I was having slow crank issues a while back, replaced the starter and it cranks much better now.I went with a "premium" starter from Oreillys(only because I have a connection there) and so far so good..a year-ish later but it does come with a lifetime warranty..

It cranks slow all the time, hot or cold, but worse if cold or if first start of the day. It is the original starter and it has 270K miles. Im gonna put it on ramps today and check all the connections. Yes Im in Flower Mound, let me know if you remember who is here. Thanks,

All the connections were good so I took starter to have it tested, it was bad. New starter cranks it much faster.

What weight oil are you running, that can play a part in starting. My original starter went 8 years.
