Disconnecting AC/heater power

My 91 4 cylinder ranger started smoking in cab on my way to work. when i popped the hood to check it i could see glowing melting plastic on the passenger side of what looked to be the A/C housing up against the firewall. A few days before I decided to see if the a/c actually worked(it didn't). The heater works but there was always a burning smell to it like it hadn't been run in a while. Anyways I need to disconnect the power and get it drivable as my wife drives the good car and I need my work commuter. Is it something that can be done with out messing with anything important or need to simply drive the truck? I don't need the heater since it gets 110+ degrees if that helps at all.
