Question Removing front axle shaft main seal - What part is this? - Solved.

I want to pull the front axle from both sides and now I'm at the point where I have the wheel hubs removed.

The manual says to use a drift and drive the axle shaft main seal out of the wheel knuckle.

I have the new seal (F81Z-3254-CB) and it doesn't look like what I am about to remove. It looks like there is another 'cup' or 'race' that the seal will be sitting in, and I want to make sure I'm not about to damage something before I just eat some spinach and beat on this thing.

Some write-ups I've read with photos don't look like they have the same thing I do. Anyone got any more info to add? Thanks.

I got the axles out and knocked the old seals off.

However there was a metal dust shield or something on the axle before the seal. My new parts (new stub axles and new seals) did not come with this metal part, and it got beat useless while removing it.

I have searched 'Google Images' with the part numbers and the part names and a few other things and I don't see it anywhere or even mentioned.

Can anyone help me with what this thing is and if I even need to put a replacement back?

Thanks.

Lame thread where I answer my own question

Well I'm just back from the edge of the internet. One of the joys of having the model year with a few changes going on.

Switch from F81Z-3254-CB to 3C3Z-3254-CA was made around 2003. 3C3Z-3254-CA has a steel plate/deflector on the back. Both are completely interchangeable, but if you go from 3C3Z- to F81Z- then you have to ensure the steel plate/deflector has been removed.

I think the reason F81Z- appears more often is becasue so many if not all the ball joint / axle write-ups were done by the early 7.3 superduty folks, like Guzzle and Springerpop etc.

The F81Z- can be found as Spicer 50491 at a good price but I haven't found a Spicer number for the 3C3Z-.

Hope it helps someone.

Oh and maybe you planned on it IDK But do yourself a Favor and Smear antiseize on everything going back together

Mine was so rusted and seized it totaly sucked I ended up getting one of those Huge 3 Jaw Pullers to get it apart and still Fought it I had the Puller so tight I thought it was going to strip out and then Beat it with a Sledge hammer

I used a Whole tube Antiseize on the front 2 wheels hopfulley next time I can take the bolts Off and it will Fall Apart !!!!!!

Hey Benny.

I had been getting a low friction sound from the front driver wheel. 4x4 was also a problem.

I had new X-code springs put on it when it went in for new HPOP. I put new Bilsteins on when I got it back. Made the ride better but didn't stop the noise. Shop said my passenger ESOF hub was a problem so I thought maybe that was the noise, so I dismantled it and regreased and reinstalled. Same noise. Switched to Warn Premiums and still same noise.

Pulled the ABS sensors and packed both sides with fresh grease. Same noise but it got better a little.

Pulled both hubs to check the needle bearings. They seemed fine, but I noticed the back of the hub drivers side, where it sits against the plastic trust washer, was badly ground. The trust washer was cut up a little. The stub axle was slightly scarred.

So I just went and got new u-joints, stub axles, seals and new Timken hubs - complete with ABS sensors and 4 back studs .... for both sides. May as well just get it all done.

So that's what I'm in the middle of right now. All my stuff came apart real easy, and hopefully I'll get it back together perfectly and the sound will be gone.

YA I thinking the sound will be gone after all that Everythings New except the steering knuckle

I bet it was the Inner Steering Knuckle Seal making that Noise That Inner knuckle seal has Bearings and stuff in it so it can seal against the Steering knucle But Press to the Axel and Seal Both Air tight

Did the Knuckle seals get Ruined upon removal Usually Do?? Or can you spin it to see if it spins SMooth or Rough.

Sounds like all the damage you found was at that Point^^ especialy with the thrust washer scared up

When you say replaced Both Stub axels Does that mean you separated the Axel at each U-Joint and then Installed new Axel From U-Joint Out

Basicaly ONLY the short axel peice that Goes threw the Steering knuckle,Unit Bearing,4X4 Hub?? Right??

Was it Expensive??? Shure sounds like it was for all that

You got it right about splitting axles.

I went to www.drivetrainamerica.com for all the parts. The stub axle is Spicer 2002692. I paid $74 each side I think.

If you call with your axle info they can get you everything you want. ALOT less then local dealer, cheaper than Tousley too.

By calling on the phone line I got the shipping options for less than the default options on the website.

Still on jacks stands. Work interrupted play today ... long day.
Might get to it tomorrow. If not it'll be the weekend.

Get to spend a few days in the Cummins.
