My '85 F-150 5.0 with fuel injection starts up just fine. It idles high for half a minute then idle down a bit. The problem is that sometimes when I shift the auto transmission from "Park" to "Drive" it stalls. She'll start back up okay. Sometimes when I'm sitting at a stop light she sounds like she wants to choke a bit and idles a little rough. I usually just keep a little pressure on the gas to keep the idle up. I'm not sure what adjustments are available to me since the truck has Fuel Injection. Any help would be appreciated!
Your Idle Air Control (IAC) is sticking. It's a common failure, especially in trucks that old. You can clean it with throttle body cleaner and get a LITTLE more life out of it, but you should just replace it. Look for one with a lifetime warranty, because it WILL go out again.
You should also inspect & repair your PCV system so there isn't as much engine oil coming up in the air filter to foul the IAC again.
Look up your truck on this site to find out how to replace the IAC and pull the codes before & after to confirm the fault.
